BAN Vs AFG, 2nd ODI: Bangladesh Beat Afghanistan By 88 Runs, Take Series 2-0

Bangladesh produced a clinical performance on Friday to humble Afghanistan in the second ODI match at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. Batting first, the hosts posted 306/4 with Liton Das hitting an impressive century (136 off 126) against an intimidating bowling attack that has the likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim also played his part with the bat, scoring 86 off 93 balls. Afghanistan, who lost the series opener by four wickets on Wednesday, struggled from the outset as they chase a stiff target of 307 runs. The visitors were 34/3 inside the first ten overs. Half-centuries from Rahmat Shah (52 off 71) and Najibullah Zadran (54 off 61) helped them stay afloat for a while, but they were eventually dismissed for 218 all in 45.1 overs with all seven bowlers utilised by Bangladesh captain Tamim Das getting at least a wicket each. Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan were the stand-out bowlers though, claiming a brace each for 31 and 38 runs from their respective ten overs. The win helped Bangladesh take an unassailable 2-0 lead. Afif Hossain takes the final wicket, that of Fazalhaq Farooqi for a first-ball duck, to seal an 88-run win for Bangladesh. With the win, the hosts have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. They won the first match by four wickets at the same venue on Wednesday.

Taskin Ahmed has got Bangladesh their fourth wicket. The pacer clean bowled Rahmat Shah for 52. Mohammad Nabi comes in the middle. AFG 123/4 (24.1)

16:33 PM IST: AFG Rebuild 

After three early wickets, opener Rahmat Shah (40) and Najibullah Zadran (38) have taken up the responsibility to steady the sinking ship. The duo have added 64 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket. AFG 99/3 (19)

Afghanistan are in trouble early on. Chasing 307, the visitors have lost Riaz Hasan and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. Shoriful Islam took one and the other one was run out. AFG 32/2 (8)

Finally, Afghanistan set some success by dismissing Liton Das (136) and Mishfiqur Rahim (88) but that didn't stop the hosts go past 300. The third-wicket stand between Liton and Mushfiqur was 202 runs. In the process, Mushfiqur also completed 13000 international runs across formats.

Chattogram is still talking about the record partnership Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan produced on Wednesday. While it was extraordinary, it can certainly not be expected every day. 

Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan combined for a national record 174-run partnership in an unbroken seventh-wicket stand. Both players hit their career-best knocks to frustrate Afghanistan. Afif posted an unbeaten 93, his maiden 50-plus output, and Mehidy added 81 not out as Bangladesh raced to victory under floodlights.

Afghanistan’s spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi — described by Tamim Iqbal as the world’s best — could take only two wickets, with Afif and Mehidy keeping them at bay.

Bangladesh have lost just two of their last 16 ODIs played at home but if Afghanistan can replicate their bowling display -  pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi  was outstanding with four for 54 - the second BAN vs AFG match will be a close-fought affair.
