Bollywood's Faux Pas: Did Maidaan Teaser Use Arsenal FC's Chant Of Highbury In Their Opening Teaser?

Thursday, March 30, saw the teaser trailer launch of actor Ajay Devgn's upcoming sports-themed movie 'Maidaan', directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma. The film, set to be released on June 23, sees Devgn play the role of Syed Abdul Rahim, a legendary football coach, who according to the film’s official synopsis was "an unknown hero who created history and records for India such that even 60 years later, we are not able to match up to those accomplishments in the most played sport in the world, football." The teaser begins with shots from the 1952 Summer Olympics held in Helsinki, Finland. It narrates the story of one of India's best-ever performances as the nation takes on Yugoslavia on a nearly flooded pitch, with the players barefoot. However, in the background, one can hear a chant that seems to have a connection with Arsenal. 

The chant of "We're the North Bank, Highbury..." can be heard in the background just as the camera pans to the footballers taking the muddy pitch. A faux pas, perhaps? A clarification from the film’s team could help football fans understand the logic behind featuring an Arsenal chant in a Helsinki Olympics scene.

‘Maidaan’ also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao, and Bengali actor Rudranil Ghosh. Produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Arunava Joy Sengupta and Akash Chawla, the film's screenplay and dialogues have been written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah.
