Rohit Sharma misses out a game yet again. In IPL 2020 Rohit missed four consecutive games mid-season (against CSK, RR, RCB, and DC) due to a similar left hamstring strain. Kieron Pollard led the side in his absence before Rohit returned for the final league game and the playoffs.
A short debut for the debutant Danish Malewar as he departs after scoring only 2 runs. Walked across on the stumps and looked to flick Kagiso Rabada's ball on the onside. But ended up missing it and the ball struck him flush in front of the stumps. Umpire raised the finger immediately. Some high-quality bowling and Malewar couldn't better it. Naman Dhir joins Quinton de Kock.
Massive blow for Mumbai Indians as Quinton de Kock, last game's centurion, departs early. Contrary to his strengths, de Kock was done by the pace of Kagiso Rabada. After Malewar's dismissal, de Kock was looking to up the ante by taking on the bowlers but Rabada bowled tighter and shorter and de Kock miscued the pull shot. Rabada himself settled under the top edge and took a simple catch. MI in trouble yet again.
Kagiso Rabada is on absolute fire and he has completely destroyed the Mumbai Indians top three with his fiery bowling. After De Kock and Malewar, he gets the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. Yadav has been creating pressure on Rabada by hitting a six and a four of his third over. But Rabada came back strong, keeping the ball on good length and nipping it through his gets. Suryakumar got his furnitue wrecked and GT is flying here.
Not much Mumbai Indians could have done after the early fall of wickets and both Naman Dhir and Tilak Verma have looked to stabilise the innings instead of taking risks. They have knocked around the ball and tried to provide a base to the innings from where the hitters can come in and accelerate. MI still have Hardik Pandya, Sherfane Rutherford, who can change the dynamics of the game in seconds.
Naman Dhir's knock comes to an end. Given the situation, he scored a well-made 45, but eventually he had to give in to the building pressure. Was looking good with his down the ground hits and strike rotation but ended up pulling Prasidh Krishan's short ball to the hands of the deep square leg fielder. Tilak Varma stays unbeaten on the other end.
Lot of action happening in the last three overs. First Tilak Varma decided to shift gears after the break and he took on Prasidh Krishna. Scalped three boundaries off his bowling. Then some drama unfolded as a no ball review was denied and it was called as umpires call as the ball's height matched exactly with the waist height of Tilak Varma. Next over, Kagiso Rabada runs in and bowls another economic over, ending his spell of 3/33.
Tilak Varma has emerged as the lone warrior for Mumbai Indians tonight in Ahmedabad, anchoring the innings with a brilliant half-century under immense pressure. Coming in at a precarious 46/3, the southpaw initially played the anchor role before exploding in the death overs. He scored his half century in 33 deliveries and went on a spree of hitting boundaries, finding five in one over
A fantastic knock from Tilak Varma and he ends up his innings after scoring an unbeaten 101 in 45 deliveries. His last 82 runs came at breakneck speed of 23 deliveries and his ball-striking powers Mumbai Indians to a formidable 199/5 after they started really slow with their top order dismantled within the powerplay. The GT seamers couldn't slow down Tilak and he kept on striking till the last ball. This is his maiden century in the IPL and finally he has put behind his bad form. MI will be happy going into the break and they will come out with momentum.
Disastrous first two overs for Gujarat Titans and they are in the hole. Their top three has been their run bank for them and two of them got removed in the first two overs. For a change, MI handed over the new ball to Jasprit Bumrah and he struck in his first ball, getting Sai Sudharsan foxed while driving on the up. The cover point fielder got an easy catch. In the next over, Hardik Pandya nipped one in to strike the pads of Jos Buttler and the DRS review showed umpires call, adjudging Buttler out. Gill and Washington Sundar look to rebuild.

Gujarat Titans have lost all three of their top order stars within the powerplay. Shubman Gill was the last one to depart after playing a cramped pull to the hands of the deep square leg fielder. He was not ready for the ball skidding on to his body and by the time he reacted, it was late. Ashwani Kumar strikes on his come back and Mumbai Indians are on top here.
Gujarat Titans have found themselves in a pit after losing half their side in the first ten overs. The last two wickets came in one over of Mitchell Santner where he dismissed Glenn Phillips and Washington Sundar. Sundar was the first one to depart. He tried to pull Santner over mid-wicket, but Naman Dhir plucked out the ball from thin air to complete the catch. Phillips departed in the same over. Santner's ball got stuck on the wicket and Phillips played it back to Santner's hands. Shahrukh Khan and Rahul Tewatia are out on the crease and they look to take the game deep.
What a comeback for Ashwani Kumar! He has picked four wickets in the first match he plays this season. First dismissed Shubman Gill and then got Rahul Tewatia nick one to the hands of the wicketkeeper. In his next over, he again picked two wickets in one over. Shahrukh Khan pulled his back of length ball to the hands of the deep square leg fielder and then Rashid Khan got foxed by change of pace, cutting the ball to the hands of the coverpoint fielder. GT are in a poor position and are staring at a big defeat.
After a streak of losses, Mumbai Indians get back to winning ways. They defeat Gujarat Titans by a massive 99 runs and move to the 7th position in the IPL 2026 points table. MI started their innings poorly after losing the toss. But Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir staged a comeback and Tilak carried to massively accelerate and score an unbeaten century. MI carried momentum in the break and Jasprit Bumrah getting first wicket in the first ball of the GT innings set the tempo. Ashwani Kumar marked his return by scalping four wickets and it decided the game. GT will be disappointed with their batting and bowling performance. Meanwhile, Pandya and co get new oxygen.
"Honestly, I think we gave away too many runs in the middle overs. On a wicket like that, I think 160-170 was a par score. But I think there are a lot of learnings for us from this game. (Makes you go back to the drawing board?) I mean, a small hiccup, but now we’ve got a couple of games on the road, so hopefully we will come back on the winning side again. (What do you think you could have done better?)
"I think the wicket was a little bit on the slower side".
"I don’t think we hit the right areas. The length ball wasn’t coming on as well, some balls were coming, some weren’t, and some were keeping low. I think we could have hit that length in the middle overs a bit more consistently, which we were not able to.
(Did the pitch change when they were batting?) "I think it was pretty similar. If at all, it could have gotten a little bit better because I think there was a bit more dew when we were batting".
"(What was the plan?) Nothing special really. Once I went in there, I saw that bowling hard lengths and back-of-a-length deliveries was working, so I kept backing that plan".
"(Good use of variations?) Yes, yes. I was planning it along with Hardik bhaiya. Whatever the wicket demanded or whatever the situation demanded, I bowled accordingly".
"(MI's planning was good today) Yes sir, we had very solid planning. (Use of short balls?) Yes, that was because the wicket demanded it. We were planning to take wickets, and after discussing it with Hardik bhaiya, we executed accordingly".
"(Thoughts on his second four-wicket haul in IPL?) I was thinking a lot about this, whenever I get a chance to play, I want to do well. So today it happened, and it feels great".
"Very important. It is always challenging to go away and win. Also, Ahmedabad has not been a happy ground for Mumbai Indians, so very satisfying. The talent Tilak has he does not need much advice. It was about time he comes and delivers".
"It was much needed for the group, for Tilak and Mumbai Indians. Quite fascinating, I have seen many people asking why Jassi hasn't bowled with the new ball, but he hasn't bowled with the new ball, maybe 7 or 8 times, so it is not a Hardik Pandya problem, it is Jassi being special".
"It was about bowling in the right areas and bowling with a right intent. Really amazing by the youngsters, so fielding had to click, special mention to Naman as well".
Tilak Varma is handed the player of the match awarded for his unbeaten knock of 101 runs in just 45 deliveries.
"Ofcourse the first hundred will be special. Last 5 games I hadn't spent much time in the middle, so I wanted to spend time in the middle. I know if I face a few balls then I know what I can do. I was just seeing the situation what the team needs, I was staying stable and playing accordingly. It was very important, the way Naman was crucial, the way we played after that, we are all proud".
Mumbai Indians play arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings on April 23, Thursday.
Gujarat Titans clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 24, Friday.
