The teams are lined up for the national anthems, with Bangladesh's first, followed by India's. It's almost time, let's get ready for an exciting match.
Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are opening for India -- a blend of experience and fresh talent. Let’s see how this dynamic duo shapes the game. Taskin Ahmed is showing his magic with the new ball.
IND 2/0
Hasan Mahmud joins Taskin Ahmed with the new ball, keeping his line outside off to tempt Rohit Sharma into a drive. But the Indian captain is showing patience, letting the deliveries pass.
IND 4/0
Huge shout for LBW, but did Rohit Sharma get an inside edge? There were definitely two sounds. Bangladesh reviews the not-out decision. Rohit steps towards Mahmud, who’s bowling in a great area. Bangladesh are unlucky, as ball tracking shows it clipping the top of the stumps. The not-out call likely came due to the two sounds, not the height, but in the end, it's the height that saves him.
IND 4/0
Rohit Sharma gives the crowd something to cheer for at the end of the fourth over. A much-improved over, and Rohit caps it off with a cracking square drive for four, the first boundary of the series. Then, Yashasvi joins the boundary wagon and hits a four.
IND 14/0
Hasan Mahmud gets his man, Rohit Sharma. After mixing it up, he draws the edge with superb bowling. Following a first over that didn't trouble him, Mahmud delivers a wobble-seam ball on a good length. Rohit has to play the angle, and it seams away just enough to take a healthy edge, perfectly positioned for the second slip. And Sharma is out.
Shubman Gill Walks In
IND 14/1 (5.5)
Big shout for LBW, but this one’s too high. And On the very next ball, Shubman Gill is out for a duck in an unusual dismissal. The delivery is too full and down the leg side; Gill goes for runs but ends up nicking it. The edge is loud enough to be heard.
Virat Kohli Walks In
IND 28/2 (7.4)
Virat Kohli makes a positive start with a trademark flick through wide mid-on earning cheers from the crowd. He expertly covers the line of the length ball, placing it perfectly for three runs.
IND 34/2 (9)
Bangladesh Dominate as Virat Kohli Falls to Familiar Trap. Kohli drives at a ball outside off that’s just not close enough. It’s a touch shorter than the previous delivery, but still on a good length, with a perfect line that straightens up. Kohli edges it through to the keeper and the drive wasn’t on this time.
Rishabh Pant Walks In
IND 34/3 (9.5)
Rishabh Pant flicks the ball into the outfield, sending the crowd into a roar. Rana is the fielder, but Pant’s shot has the crowd buzzing with excitement.
IND 40/3 (11.5)
It’s essentially a free hit for Rishabh Pant. The ball is dug in, wide and rising to around chest height. With true bounce, Pant stands tall and carves it beautifully through backward point. AND HITS A FOUR.
IND 46/3 (12.5)
A full delivery is whipped through midwicket. The batters think about three but settle for two. Clocking in at 147 km/h, but Yashasvi Jaiswal makes sure to put it away, even though it was just above yorker length. If they can get underneath it, they’re fine closing the bat face and reaping the rewards. Both players help India past 50.
IND 59/3 (15.3)
After losing three early wickets, these youngsters, Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal, ensured they didn't succumb to the pressure and stayed composed. They played pretty safe shots while unleashing big hits whenever the opportunity was there.
IND 67/3 (17.5)
That's some good attacking batting, Jaiswal eliminates length from the equation by sweeping from well in front, as Mehidy drifts it in from wide of the crease.
IND 75/3 (19)
Edged -- but it doesn’t carry to slip! Rishabh Pant capitalizes with a boundary for four.
IND 86/3 (22)
Mehidy returns for his third over. Just two runs scored in the last over of the first session as the players head off for lunch.
Post lunch session to start around 12:10pm IST.
IND 88/3 (23)
The first hour belonged to Bangladesh, while the next was dominated by India. Pacer Hasan Mahmud ripped through the Indian top order, claiming three wickets and reducing the hosts to 88 for three at lunch on the opening day of the first Test in the two-match series on Thursday.
Hasan Mahmud is back, having been the standout bowler today. He approaches the crease over the wickets, flanked by three slips, ready to make an impact once again. Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal appears to be playing differently in the second session.
IND 88/3 (23.4)
Hasan Mahmud gives an angled one to Rishabh Pant, and FOUR runs. On a length with some extra bounce, Pant defends it with the bottom hand off an angled delivery and finds the boundary. And he's out on the next ball.
KL Rahul Walks In
IND 96/4 (25.3)
Not a bad delivery, Yashasvi Jaiswal steps down to convert it into a half-volley, square-driving it through cover-point for four.
IND 103/4 (29.1)
This battle between Hasan Mahmud and Yashasvi Jaiswal has been intriguing. Jaiswal has found the boundary, but Mahmud has also beaten his outside edge a couple of times. KL Rahul joins in, too, hitting a delivery that’s too full right on his toes, executing a lovely on-drive straight past mid-on for four.
IND 120/4 (31)
Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowls to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who taps it for 1 run. That’s his fifty.
IND 133/4 (35.5)
The Indian players at the crease are missing a few balls, going slow, and taking plenty of singles. It’s safe to say they’re playing cautiously.
IND 136/4 (37.5)
Mehidy Hasan Miraz to Yashasvi Jaiswal and it is a FOUR. Jaiswal slaps it, and the fielder at cover, Shanto, attempts a catch but misjudges it. The ball lands a meter or two in front and races to the boundary.
IND 144/4 (41.1)
Interestingly, only one spinner has been used so far, with Shakib Al Hasan yet to be introduced. It’s Chennai, where spinners usually make the difference.
Pace at 148 km/h, Nahid Rana delivers a wobble ball on a hard length from over the wicket, angling away through the fourth-stump channel. Yashasvi Jaiswal attempts to ride the bounce with a slightly open-faced defense, but fails. Nahid celebrates with a cheeky smile and a wink. KL Rahul falls too.
Ravindra Jadeja And Ravichandran Ashwin Walk In
IND 149/6 (43)
Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin are both going on the attack against the Bangladeshi bowling. Now, the question is whether they can restore the Indian innings and stabilize the team's position.
IND 165/6 (45)
Hasan Mahmud to Ravichandran Ashwin and he gets FOUR runs. The edge flies between the second slip and gully, finding the boundary.
IND 175/6 (47.5)
Another mixed session - Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant got off to a solid start, but Hasan Mahmud struck early, dismissing Pant for 39. Jaiswal reached his fifty in 95 balls, while KL Rahul also played some impressive shots.
However, Nahid Rana took down Jaiswal, and Mehidy Hasan sent Rahul back to the pavilion. Now, R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are at the crease, with Ashwin displaying some stylish strokes leading up to Tea.
Taskin Ahmed starts the proceedings. Ravichandran Ashwin punches the ball toward cover and scampers for a quick double -- beautifully executed.
IND 178/6 (48.5)
Caught on the crease and given out, but Ravindra Jadeja opts for the review, hoping it’s too high. The delivery is on a good length and skids on, catching Jadeja by surprise. The replay reveals he had an inside edge. Nahid Mahmud will have to wait for his five-for -- phew, Jadeja is safe.
IND 186/6 (50.4)
It's Ashwin's world, we are just living in it. This delivery nips back, hitting Ashwin on the knee roll and prompting a strong LBW appeal, but it’s not given. They decide to review it, and I suspect Ashwin might escape on umpire's call. Being a tall man, Ashwin benefits as the projection shows the ball is missing the top of the stumps.
IND 208/6 (52.4)
Shakib Al Hasan is finally introduced into the attack, and Ravindra Jadeja responds by hitting him for four with a paddle sweep as the ball drifts down the leg. Next, Ashwin slog sweeps him for a SIX! Terrific strokeplay on display, as it seems the spinner poses no threat to the Indians.
IND 219/6 (55)
Ashwin and Jadeja have put together 79 runs in just 83 balls, displaying some stunning shots. Ashwin is closing in on his fifty as well. Can he reach 50? Let's see.
IND 228/6 (57.3)
Half century -- Ravichandran Ashwin raises his bat as he takes a single, celebrating his well-earned 50.
IND 236/6 (60)
Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have turned things around, bringing the total to a solid 254 -- a far cry from when India lost those early wickets. They've put together a fantastic 100-run partnership. Ashwin then shows off with an upper cut to third man for four, and just like that, he adds another boundary. What a turnaround.
IND 255/6 (62.3)
Shakib Al Hasan is greeted with a boundary on the first ball of this over as Ashwin sweeps it behind square leg for four.
IND 269/6 (66)
Jadeja takes a single to bring up his well-deserved fifty with his signature sword action.
IND 278/6 (68.3)
Nahid Rana is brought back for another spell. Will India cross the 320 mark?
IND 291/6 (71.1)
Mehidy Hasan with the ball, and Ashwin charges down the track, smashing it for a six over deep mid-wicket! India has now crossed the 300-run mark.
IND 304/6 (73.2)
Ravindra Jadeja smacks Mehidy for a four and follows it up with a massive six over deep mid-wicket. Meanwhile, R Ashwin is nearing his century.
IND 327/6 (77)
The legend of Ravichandran Ashwin keeps growing. On Thursday, the celebrated Indian cricketer delivered a brilliant performance, notching his sixth century. Alongside fellow all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, he helped revive India's innings on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh at Chepauk, Chennai.
IND 338/6 (79.3)
The umpire calls for stumps! India has made a remarkable recovery, rising from 144/6 to 339/6, thanks to the unbeaten 195-run partnership between R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. With this momentum, reaching 400 now feels well within their grasp.
That’s all from the first day of the India vs Bangladesh 1st Test. What a day for India. The duo of Ashwin and Jadeja showcased their dominance with a remarkable partnership, highlighted by Ashwin’s sixth Test century, his second consecutive century at Chepauk. Both batters remain at the crease as we wait for Day 2 tomorrow, looking to further boost India’s tally, which was once struggling at 144/6.
A record was made - Ashwin, Jadeja record highest seventh-wicket partnership at Chepauk.
We'll see you all tomorrow. Until then, Bye Bye.
