Hello and welcome to the coverage of the first India-Bangladesh Test going on in Chennai. Today is the second day of the game.
What happened yesterday? Here is a recap
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bowl first with both teams going into the game with three pacers each.
India stumbled early on losing Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli cheaply. Hasan Mahmud took all three wickets. Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his fine form to bring up a fifty and raise a good partnership with comeback man Rishabh Pant. However, Mahmud returned again to strike the fourth time to reduce India to 96-4. Soon, Jaiswal and KL Rahul to fell as India found themselves struggling at 144-6. Bangladesh were looking in control before tables turned with R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja putting India in command. By the end of the day, the duo had stitched an unbeaten 195-run partnership with Ashwin scoring his sixth Test hundred and Jadeja too looking set to for a three-figure outing. Bangladesh looked clueless in the final session yesterday. They will badly need wickets now.
1) R Ashwin (IND) - 6 centuries, 3411; 516 wickets
2) Stuart Broad (ENG) - 1 century, 3662; 604 wickets
The team huddles up as the umpires take their positions. R Ashwin (102*) and Ravindra Jadeja (86*) are set to pick up from Day 1. With the new ball in hand, Taskin Ahmed start with the ball.
Hasan Mahmud gives one to Ashwin and the star hits FOUR. Wide delivery, Ashwin takes a calculated gamble, slashes at it, gets a thick edge, and it flies over the slips for the first runs of the day.
IND 343/7 (83.1)
Taskin Ahmed makes his mark in the second over of the day. The ball shapes into the left-hander, and Ravindra Jadeja gets a faint edge straight to slip. The impressive 199-run partnership is broken. Jadeja played a fantastic innings but misses out on a century by 14 runs.
Now, Akash Deep is in to bat. He’s known for his ability to hit big, as we've seen in domestic cricket.
IND 348/7 (83.1)
Akash Deep gets off the mark with a beautifully timed flick to square leg for four. Now he sets his sights on the cover region, striking another boundary! Hasan delivers a full ball, and Akash drives it, sending it just over the infield into the gap between cover and backward point.
IND 353/7 (84.1)
Akash Deep's batting and fielding stats include his performance in Tests and First-Class (FC) cricket. In Tests, he has played 1 match and batted in 1 innings, scoring 9 runs with a highest score of 9. His batting average stands at 9.00, with a strike rate of 31.03, and he has not scored any centuries or fifties, hitting 0 fours and 1 six.
In First-Class cricket, he has played 32 matches and batted in 41 innings, accumulating a total of 486 runs, with his highest score being 53 not out. His batting average in FC is 12.78, and his strike rate is 75.58. He has not registered any centuries but has 1 fifty, along with 32 fours and 38 sixes. In terms of fielding, he has taken 14 catches in FC cricket.
Akash Deep plays a spectacular straight drive off Hasan for four and holds the pose.
IND 359/7 (86.1)
A yorker is dug out to mid-on, but the throw from there catches Akash Deep in the back. The physio rushes over to check on him as he’s seen rubbing his back repeatedly.
IND 367/7 (88.4)
Akash Deep is dismissed, going for a slog off Taskin and top-edging it straight to the fielder at mid-off. He departs for 17 runs off 30 balls.
Jasprit Bumrah steps in as the new batter and quickly gets off the mark with a four off his first ball, opening the face of the bat to guide a fuller delivery past the slip cordon.
IND 367/7 (88.5)
Ravichandran Ashwin departs after his first aggressive shot of the day fails to connect properly. He attempted to go over mid-off but lacked the power, falling for a well-crafted 113 runs off 133 balls. As he walks off, he receives a standing ovation from the crowd, marking Taskin’s third wicket of the day.
Mohammed Siraj Walks In
IND 374/9 (90.5)
Bangladesh took the last four Indian wickets in just over an hour. Seems like a job well done. This marks only the fourth instance of all ten Indian batters being caught out in a Test innings at home.
Hasan Mahmud made history as the first Bangladeshi bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in India during the first Test at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. He finished with impressive figures of 5/83 as India was bowled out for 376.
Jasprit Bumrah will open India's bowling. It’s going to be tough for Bangladesh to chase down runs against this formidable attack. Let's see if their batting can impress as much as Bumrah's bowling did.
BAN 2/0 (0.2)
Jasprit Bumrah opens India’s bowling, with Shadman Islam and Zakir at the crease. And OUT, Bumrah’s delivery nips back in and clips the bails, sending Shadman back for just 2 runs. A strong early breakthrough for India.
Zakir Hasan and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto at crease.
BAN 2/1 (1.2)
What a lovely drive. It's even more commendable considering what preceded it. The ball was full and just outside off, with little movement this time. Shanto strides forward beautifully and drives it past Rohit at cover.
BAN 8/1 (3.5)
Siraj is back in action, probing the Bangladeshi batters. Caught on the stump mic, Rohit Sharma says, “Height nahi hai, nikal jayega left mai” (There’s no height, it’ll go past the left side), as Siraj appeared to have caught Zakir LBW. No DRS was taken. Siraj looks disappointed and still feels DRS would have worked in India's favour.
BAN 12/1 (5.1)
A change from the other end as home favorite R Ashwin comes into the attack.
BAN 21/1 (7.5)
Akash Deep strikes twice, clean bowling Zakir Hasan for just 3 runs off 22 balls, knocking the middle stump down. And there's another WICKET. Akash Deep clean bowls Mominul, sending him back to the pavilion.
BAN 22/3 (8.2)
Similar to India, Bangladesh lost three wickets in their first 10 overs, but India had more runs at that stage. To make things worse for Bangladesh, the batting conditions now are much better than they were during the first hour of Day 1 yesterday. This session goes India's way.
Siraj kicks off the attack in the second session.
BAN 26/3 (9.4)
Shanto edges the ball and it’s caught at second slip. Facing Siraj, he tries to counter the movement, but the wobble-seam delivery nips away just enough to catch the outside edge. The ball flies quickly to Virat Kohli at second slip, who makes no mistake. Siraj is bowling in great areas, providing no respite and no loose balls.
Litton Das Comes In
BAN 38/4 (11.3)
Another wicket for Bumrah, the Indian bowling attack is proving to be too much for the tigers. Bumrah continues targeting the good length, but Rahim adjusts to the angle this time, but this delivery surprises by swinging after it bounces. Though Rahim was expecting the angle, the late swing found the outside edge, and KL Rahul took a brilliant catch at second slip. It's just outstanding from India.
BAN 44/5 (13.1)
Litton Das delivers another square drive, this time off Siraj. This is outstanding batting! In response, Siraj fires in a quick delivery that angles into Das's pads, looking to catch him off guard.
BAN 63/5 (16.5)
After a rapid start filled with boundaries, Shakib and Litton have now switched to a more defensive approach. Ashwin and Akash are bowling with precision, maintaining tight lines that leave the batters with little room to maneuver.
BAN 68/5 (20.2)
Siraj appears to be hurt at the boundary as Jadeja is brought into the attack. Siraj walks out the field limping.
BAN 79/5 (23.3)
Jadeja with his third. Shakib sweeps and hits another FOUR. Good show by Bangladeshi batter. He again tries the same shot but misses this time.
BAN 88/5 (27)
Liton Das goes for a sweep shot but ends up catching the top edge. Dhruv Jurel, the substitute fielder stationed in the deep, takes the catch effortlessly. This marks Jadeja's first wicket of the match, and now Mehidy has come to the crease as the new batter. And within minutes, he took another wicket and this time Shakib falls.
BAN 92/7 (31)
Siraj returns for his second spell, and he seems to be walking fine now -- a relief for India.
BAN 105/7 (33.4)
It was inevitable, wasn’t it? Bumrah proves too good for Hasan Mahmud. He fires in a length ball around the fourth or fifth stump, and Mahmud hangs his bat out, edging it straight to Kohli at second slip.
TEA BREAK
BAN 112/8 (36.5)
Bangladesh trail by 264 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah became the sixth Indian fast bowler to reach 400 international wickets during the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday. Bumrah hit this milestone after claiming three crucial wickets on the second day of play.
Four runs come off Siraj's over, and now Bumrah is back in the attack. He sends down a fierce bouncer that strikes Taskin right on the helmet. The batters manage to sneak a bye, and Taskin undergoes a concussion test.
BAN 124/8 (39.1)
Bumrah continues with short balls to Taskin, and India has now positioned a short leg. OUT! It was only a matter of time, and Bumrah lands a perfect yorker. Taskin is dismissed, marking Bumrah's fourth wicket of the match.
BAN 132/9 (43)
Siraj returns to the attack and dismisses Nahid with his first ball, clean bowling him. India now holds a 227-run lead.
India delivered a comprehensive and relentless bowling display, skittling Bangladesh out for just 149 runs. Despite earning the right to enforce a follow-on, India chose not to do so. The action resumes as Rohit and Jaiswal walk in to open the second innings for India.
IND 14/0 (1.3)
Rohit departs cheaply once again, as Taskin induces an outside edge that goes straight to third slip. Bangladesh secures an early wicket. Shubman Gill steps in at number three and gets off the mark with a single.
IND 23/1 (4.4)
Mahmud bowled a full, straight delivery, and Kohli expertly used his wrists to guide the ball between mid-on and midwicket for a delightful four. What a shot.
IND 44/2 (9.3)
Mehidy Hasan is brought into the attack. Kohli takes a single, followed by a few dot balls from Gill. However, Gill then takes a run to give Kohli the strike.
IND 58/2 (12)
The scoring rate has slowed to a crawl, with the Indian batters managing just a single run per over. This over is no different, as Shakib allows only one run.
IND 63/2 (18.2)
As the day’s play comes to a close, the trend continues with just one run scored. It seems unlikely that any big runs will be added today. And just like that Kohli goes out after scoring a four.
IND 67/3 (19.2)
What a magnificent strike. Pant dances down the track to meet the tossed-up delivery and sends it soaring straight over the bowler's head. Stumps approaching? Who cares? Not Pant that's for sure. Before this Kohli was beaten on the inside edge, and gets hit low on the front pad, in front of off. LBW - HE DOESN'T REVIEW.
IND 80/3 (21.5)
India was all out for 376 by the end of the first session, after which the bowlers made life tough for the Bangladeshi batters. Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja each claimed two. Bangladesh collapsed for just 149 runs.
The hosts opted to bat again but lost Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli. Shubman Gill has looked solid as he remains at the crease with Rishabh Pant heading into Day 3. India currently lead Bangladesh by 308 runs.
The story after Day 2 is that India are leading, which is the most significant takeaway on home ground. The Indian bowling attack has been phenomenal. Now, as India return to bat, we look forward to more cricket tomorrow. Until then, bye bye.
