New Zealand: Tom Latham (c), Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell (wk), Glenn Phillips, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Ajaz Patel, William ORourke
Day 2 started with the Indian team winning the toss and opting to bat first. India were restricted to 46 runs by the Kiwi bowlers. It was India's lowest team total on home soil. New Zealand were 180/3 after 50 overs when the umpires called for stumps. Devon Conway made 91 runs off just 105 balls. Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell are unbeaten.
"Sunshine and blue skies today. Surface now looks decent for batting. We said there was a lot of moisture but that has dried up. These cracks have opened up. Every spot the bowlers hit yesterday have created dents in the surface. That will mean it might move up and down a bit" reckon Simon Doull and Murali Karthik.
Pitch report for day 3
Daryl Mitchell gives away his wicket as Yashasvi Jaiswal clings on to a catch but also injures himself in the process. India have a breakthrough they needed this morning and they need more so of these, if they are to get back in this contest.
NZ - 193/4 (55), IND - 46
BlackCaps have lost their fifth wicket in the form of Tom Blundell who handed an easy catch to KL Rahul in the slips. Jasprit Bumrah has struck again and despite a hefty lead in the offing, Indians know a lead less than 300 can be decent enough, given the slow nature of the Bengaluru track.
NZ - 215/5 (60), IND - 46
Ravindra Jadeja and India continue to take wickets as Glenn Phillips was the latest to fall to the off-spinner. The batter completely missed the straighter one and it passes through his defence and castles him. India celebrate as they know it's just the tail remaining.
NZ - 224/6 (64), IND - 46
The visitors' lead has bulked up to 210 runs as Tim Southee has joined up half-centurion Rachin Ravindra at the crease. Despite seven wickets down, Kiwis want to score more runs. As for India, plan is simple - finish up the tail and bat as quickly as possible.
NZ - 256/7 (70), IND - 46
Rachin Ravindra has been brilliant ever since he has walked out and is attacking the Indian bowlers especially Ravi Ashwin. He has hit the bad balls away and sort of created a headache for Rohit Sharma, as the Indian team eyes wickets. The lead is slowly catching up towards 250.
NZ - 280/7 (75), IND - 46
Indian bowlers, after having a brilliant start to the morning, are now left facing the ignominy of a huge lead thanks largely to Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra, with the latter on the verge of a century. Ravindra has attacked the Indian bowlers and would look to complete the three-figure mark ahead of lunch.
NZ - 302/7 (78), IND - 46
Wow!!! Rachin Ravindra becomes the 1st Kiwi player to score a century on Indian soil since Ross Taylor in 2013. What a knock by the southpaw, and that too on his 'home' turf. India have been pegged back and after a bright morning start, this Ravindra innings has surely dealt them a blow.
NZ - 335/7 (80), IND - 46
Rachin Ravindra, Tim Southee frustrate India as their lead swells on day three of the 1st IND vs NZ Test in Bengaluru. Rachin Ravindra is unbeaten on 104 whereas Tim Southee is on 49. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 3 wickets.
NZ - 345/7 (81), IND - 46
New Zealand's lead has gone past 300 runs as Tim Southee and Rachin Ravindra continue to blunder the Indian bowlers. NZ's current Run-rate is 4.27 and there seems to be no stopping them.
NZ - 362/7 (85), IND - 46
Tim Southee fell for a well-made 65 as Mohammed Siraj sent back the in-form batter post-lunch. Just as he was releasing the shackles, Siraj struck for India but the visitors' lead has swelled past 300.
India sent back Ajaz Patel as they are one wicket away from batting away in the 1st IND Vs NZ Test in Bengaluru. However, New Zealand lead by 338 runs.
NZ - 384/9 (90), IND - 46
And it's a wrap! The innings is finally over as New Zealand have been bowled out for 402 in their 1st innings. Rachin Ravindra (134) played a classy knock as the visitors posted a formidable 356 runs lead. We will have the Indian run-chase in a moment.
NZ - 402, IND - 46
India are set an improbable 1st innings lead of 356 as Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal look to trim down the lead against a formidable NZ attack. The task won't be easy.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 17/0
Unlike in their previous games, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have started of cautiously. 10 Overs in to the chase and India are 33/0. Spin has been introduced for the first time by the Kiwis.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 33/0
India negotiated the new-ball quite well and brought up the half-century stand as they try to hunt down the 356-run lead. The Kiwis have brought on Ajaz Patel post-tea as they look to break the partnership between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 57/0
India have lost successive wickets as both the Indian openers are back in the hut. Yashasvi Jaiswal (35) and Rohit Sharma (52) ended up losing their wickets as New Zealand struck back after a wicketless pre-tea session. India still trail by over 200 runs.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 95/2
Virat Kohli has walked in and is looked in deft touch with some smooth boundaries. He is accompanied by Sarfaraz Khan, one current and the other the former RCB, will look to take India as near as possible to the 356-run lead.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 116/2
India have crossed 150 in Bengaluru as they trail by 204 runs. Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan are entertaining the crowd with some sleek shot-making and not letting the Kiwi bowlers settle in.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 152/2
Indian middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan has just hit two consecutive sixes off Ajaz Patel's over. Just mentioned earlier, India don't want the Kiwi bowlers to settle and are attacking every ball with merit. This will be a long evening for the BlackCaps.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 167/2
Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli have brought up a century stand for the third wicket and are looking solid as ever at the crease. It seems the Kiwi bowlers are looking tired but they are not out of the game as of yet and couple of wickets, could bring them back in the game.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 199/2
As per Cricbuzz - 9000 Test runs for Virat Kohli - fourth Indian to reach the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar (15921), Rahul Dravid (13265) and Sunil Gavaskar (10122). Of the four, he is the slowest to reach the milestone in terms of innings taken (197).
DRAMA! Final ball of the day and Glenn Phillips delivers a straighter one that zips past Virat Kohli's bat. The NZ players celebrate but VK thinks otherwise. Upon taking the review, a slight knick shows and ends the star batter's majestic innings. India are three down.
NZ - 402; IND - 46, 231/3
Here's what young Kiwi southpaw Rachin Ravindra told the host broadcaster at the end of day's play:
"I guess I was just trying to build partnerships and the partnership with Timmy [Tim Southee] really helped me out. It's a really good wicket out there. Yes, it's comforting though the wicket is different and nice playing in this ground (on playing in Bengaluru). It's great [to have my father and family around] and always appreciate the support from the Bangalore crowd. It was huge and Virat is a great player and we still have runs on the board. We know that things happen quickly in this part of the world."
It seemed like Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan's counter-attacking partnership could shape into a game-changing one, if unbroken at the end of Day 3. But Kohli's dramatic last-ball scalp by Glenn Phillips has brought the Kiwis back in front, given that the hosts trail by 125 runs and two whole days are still to come. India do have a strong middle and lower-middle order comprising KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin to follow and if Sarfaraz manages to hold fort, who knows what can happen.
With that, we conclude our coverage today. We will back tomorrow morning with live updates from day 4 of the first India vs New Zealand Test, which is poised nicely after India's combative batting display so far in the second essay. Until then, goodbye.
