Gill has to make the walk back, and Ajaz Patel has four. His love story with the Wankhede Stadium continues. A mature knock from Gill but the job was long from over. New Zealand's left-arm spinner has been in good rhythm since Lunch and it is showing.
There's trouble and lots of it for India. New Zealand have been all over them since lunch. One brings two as Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan have fallen cheaply. India's last recognised batting pair out there in the middle with Sundar joining Gill.
While the ground staff clean the surface in and around the pitch, there's quite a bit of dust coming off while brooming the rough areas. Batting will certainly be hard on Day 3 and 4. However, the surface is not misbehaving just yet.

India started really well, showcased a lot of intent, but New Zealand did fight back with Ish Sodhi picking up Pant. India are 40 behind with five wickets in hand.
Shubman Gill has looked really solid on one end, while Ravindra Jadeja is slowly getting into his groove. With not much time left for lunch on Day 2, India will be hoping to go back with five wickets still in the bag and bat well in the second session.
That’s a much needed breakthrough for New Zealand, and Pant has to walk back. It has been all India for the last 90 minutes or so, but the wrist-spinner Sodhi gets the visitors’ first breakthrough of the morning. Pant has a word with Gill and reviews, however, the original call stays and he has to walk back for 60.
The good start gets better for India. Sensational hour of play. The hosts have scored 77 runs in 14 overs and have not lost any wicket. Gill did get a reprieve before his fifty but India have been solid overall. Chapman will not be a happy man, and Phillips certainly won't.
It’s a fifty for Rishabh Pant and talk about the timing of it. He’s played brilliantly, and now has got India back into the game. On the other hand, Shubman Gill has also shown intent and the 25-year-old has reached his fifty too. It is certainly getting promising for India, and they will look to bat deep and long, and bat New Zealand out of the game.,
Well, well. Chapman drops Gill. How costly will that be with respect to the game? Phillips cannot believe it, New Zealand cannot believe it. Gill danced down the track and lofted one over long-on but failed to get the distance. However, it is a lucky break, and survives.
It has been a promising morning for India after a bit of a what-just-happened sort of an last evening in the final stage of play on Day 1. Pant is striking at over 117, while Gill has certainly looked composed so far. India are scoring at 4.75 an over, however, it is the wicket column that is a bit of a concern.
The second day of the third Test at the Wankhede Stadium is underway, and there's intent straight away. No prizes for guessing who. Ajaz Patel is put under pressure in the very first over by Rishabh Pant with three fours in total. Great start for Pant and India.
"I do think so (on if the conditions yesterday were the toughest he's been ever part of), I've played all around the world, Dubai is hot, Bangladesh is very muggy, but this has more heat and mugginess. It was a pleasing day, we chatted about it at the end of the day's play yesterday, 30 runs less than the 1st innings at Pune, on a wicket which was spinning a bit more, I think we can take some early wickets, it will be an important passage of play this morning."
He further added: "It's important to have a clear head on how you're going to play, I have a few shots which I like, depending on who is bowling and the field set-up. I'm just taking the opportunities as they come, it has been turbulent the last couple of years with injuries and comebacks, but it has been nice to get a full series and I'm trying to do the best I can to make a mark and help my team. Definitely looking to do that (on being unable to convert fifties into big hundreds)."
Virat Kohli was run out for just the fourth time in his Test career last evening. The previous instance dates back to January 2012, with the subsequent three run-outs occurring within the last four years, December 2020, July 2023, and now November 2024.
India looked up to this game with hope, and in no time, the team went on to crumble from 78/2 to 86/4 in some overs. Then, within a jiffy, came the back-to-back blows of night watchman Mohammed Siraj, Virat Kohli, and Yashasvi Jaiswal to the hosts' cause.
An excellent start to the day's play for India came through when Ravindra Jadeja's five-wicket haul ensured that New Zealand had been restricted to 235 runs. Daryl Mitchell scored the most with 82 runs, while Will Young added 71. Washington Sundar supported the brilliance of Jadeja well as he took four wickets and continued his impressive form from the Pune Test.
Despite Rohit Sharma scoring only 18 runs, India appeared to be in a dominating position. But the three quick wickets took away the initiative and handed the Kiwis back the control. Now, India have to face the challenge of making their first innings competitive by scoring 149 runs.
