In reply to Zimbabwe's 210 in the first innings, Ireland looked set to conceding a lead when they were 203/9. However, a last wicket stand of 47 runs put Ireland 40 runs ahead in the first innings. The second day just like the first was marred by rain.
Earlier, on Day 1, the visitors folded for 210 runs despite Prince Masavure's 74-run knock at the top of the order. Barry McCarthy and Andy McBrine both starred for the Irish side with three wickets apiece.
