Kolkata Knight Riders became the first team to qualify for the playoffs after an 18-run win over Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Hardik Pandya-led invited Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first after winning the toss. With the help of Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana and other batters, KKR somehow posted 157 runs on the board after 16 overs. Ramandeep Singh's cameo of 17 runs off just eight balls proved crucial for KKR. MI got a good start but it was only Ishan Kishan (40 off 20 balls) who was hitting big runs. Rohit Sharma's (19 off 24 balls) struggle with the bat continued. Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir fought back till the end but the target proved to be more than enough for MI as they lost the match by 18 runs. Piyush Chawla came to bowl his third over in the 13th over and Rinku Singh smashed him for a massive six that went out of the ground. The next three balls went for singles but Andre Russell tried to go for another big shot and Anshul Kamboj took a fine catch to send him back.

Jasprit Bumrah bowled the final and his fourth over of the innings. He dismissed Rinku Singh with an outside edge which brought Mitchell Starc to the ground. He took a single and gave the strike to Ramandeep, who finished the inning with a six. Mumbai Indians now need 158 runs to win the match in 16 overs.

Andre Russell dismissed Tim David on the first delivery of his second over. Now, Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera are at the crease with MI needing 57 runs off 18 balls.

Andre Russell came to bowl the 15th over and Naman Dhir targeted him. He smashed him for two sixes and a four to collect 19 runs from his over. KKR needed 22 runs in the final over but Harshit Rana bowled in the right areas and kept the ball away from the batters. He got Dhir out on the first ball, then dismissed Varma on the third delivery to almost seal the game.

With this win, KKR became the first team to qualify for the playoffs in the IPL 2024. They have 18 points in 12 matches. They have won nine and lost three matches so far. They still have two games left in the group stage.

Tough one, yeah. As a batting unit, the foundation was there but we could not capitalize after that and keep the momentum up. The wicket was a little up and down and a little tacky so momentum was very important. I think it was a par score, given the conditions, felt that the bowlers did well. Every ball that came back from the boundary came back wet. The bowlers made sure they kept taking wickets. (On his thoughts for the next game) Nothing, just to go and enjoy as much as we can and play good cricket, that’s been my motto from the start. I don’t think we’ve played enough good cricket this season.

I think I manifested this before the game (on becoming the 1st side to qualifty for the playoffs). Nerves were there, boys have been raising their hands and there have been many game-changers and kudos to each and every one of them. I feel whichever team plays the best, they got a great chance to win. They were going at great guns in the first 6 overs, and to bounce back from that situation it was nice to see. I wasn't thinking about stats or records, the weather wasn't great but we won the game and that's what is more important. It's all about understanding which bowler is doing well on that particular day, I feel both of them bowled well and my gut went with Varun (on bowling the 4th over) at that point and I backed him.

The plan was to make him (Rohit) hit across the line, obviously there was help from the wicket and I was able to use it to my advantage. Tactically we (talking about Narine) are similar, but technically we are slightly different. The wickets were too flat initially, my bowling has been same from the first match and it is just that the results are showing up now.
