Fixture: Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals
Series: Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026
Venue: Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Date: Sunday, April 14, 2026
Time: 7:30 PM IST
The rivalry between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru has historically been a clash of philosophies, pitting MI’s team-first championship pedigree against RCB’s superstar culture.
For over a decade, this fixture was defined by the legendary battles between Rohit Sharma’s strategic captaincy and Virat Kohli’s aggressive batting. Mumbai dominated the early and middle years of the IPL, often using their superior bowling depth—led by the likes of Lasith Malinga and later Jasprit Bumrah—to stifle RCB’s Big Three of Gayle, Kohli, and de Villiers.
This defensive mastery allowed MI to maintain a commanding head-to-head lead and secure five titles while RCB frequently struggled to balance their heavy batting order with a reliable bowling attack.
The narrative shifted significantly during the 2024 and 2025 seasons as the power dynamics in the league began to evolve. RCB finally broke their championship drought in 2025, a feat that injected fresh intensity into the rivalry and balanced the scales.
This is a battle between MI’s legacy of five trophies and RCB’s renewed confidence as the defending champions (having won their first title in 2025).
Head-to-Head: Across 34 meetings, MI holds a slight edge with 19 wins to RCB’s 15.
Wankhede Dominance: Mumbai has traditionally been a fortress against Bengaluru, winning 8 of their last 12 encounters at this venue.
Recent Momentum: The tide has shifted in the last two years. RCB has won 3 of the last 5 meetings, including a crucial victory at the Wankhede in the 2025 season.
The weather in Mumbai for today's match is expected to be warm and clear, typical of a coastal summer evening. At the start of the game, the temperature will be 30°C, though high humidity levels of 66% will make it feel more like 34°C. Winds are light, coming from the northwest at 11 mph, which may provide some slight relief to the players. Crucially for fans and players alike, there is a 0% chance of rain, ensuring an uninterrupted clash at the Wankhede Stadium. However, as the night progresses, humidity is expected to rise further, which will likely bring significant dew into play during the second innings. "It's a great honour, a privilege, and an achievement for any individual to be with one franchise for that long. Not many can say that. Fortunately, I can, but Rohit has been a great leader for us over the years. He's also been a terrific leader for Indian cricket. He's a legend in his own right, and as I said, long may that continue. We will continue to celebrate his success, and I'm certainly happy to have him in our dressing room"
The square boundaries are 67m and 61m; the straight boundary is 74m. Lots and lots of sixes here at the Wankhede, this is a pitch which will produce a lot of runs. There'll be some help for the seamers with a fair covering of grass on a good length area. A bit of movement and bounce, but not much turn for the spinners. If you get 200 or more, your chances of a win increase, but here you can say there's a 80% chance of victory with a 220-run score batting first, say Pommie Mbangwa and Sunil Gavaskar.
Mumbai Indians win the toss and have opted to bowl first.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Playing XI): Philip Salt, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar(c), Tim David, Jitesh Sharma(w), Romario Shepherd, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jacob Duffy, Suyash Sharma
Mumbai Indians (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton(w), Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya(c), Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Trent Boult, Mayank Markande, Jasprit Bumrah.
MI and RCB observed a minute's silence ahead of the game in honour of renowned playback singer, Asha Bhonsle, who passed away earlier today.

Phil Salt and Virat Kohli have taken the attack to the MI bowlers. RCB are 21 for no loss in the first two overs and are looking steady at the crease. PP will be vital for both teams.
RCB: 22/0 (2 Overs)
Some start for RCB in Mumbai. The superb conditions in Wankhede seen RCB amass 65 runs inside 6 overs with Salt and Kohli bludgeoning the Mumbai bowlers.
RCB: 65/0 (5 Overs)
RCB are off a blistering start at the Wankhede. There are a lot of fans in the stadium tonight and they are loving each and every bit of it. 10.71 is the current Run-rate and if this stays the same, expect the defending champs to reach a mammoth total.
RCB: 75/0 (7 Overs)
Mumbai Indians (MI) are up against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the eyes will be on the battle between Bumrah and Kohli. World's best fast bowler against the batting superme.
RCB have crossed 100-runs without losing a wicket with Phil Salt unbeaten on 78 and Kohli on 38. This has been some partnership for the RCB with MI unable to find an answer to decode the Indo-English pair. Few more overs like this and RCB could be sniffing around 200-plus.
RCB: 115/0 (10 Overs)
Shardul Thakur ends Kohli-Salt stand that saw them amass 120-runs for the opening partnership. Kohli continues with his counter-attack and now skipper Rajat Patidar launches three massive sixes off Mayank Markande's over.
RCB: 144/0 (12 Overs)
RCB captain Patidar is continuing with his rich vein of form as he approaches a fifty in Mumbai. Patidar has whacked five sixes and has looked in neat touch right from the word 'go'.
RCB: 183/1 (14 Overs)
Virat Kohli gets to his half-century and gets immediately dismissed by Hardik Pandya. Kohli takes the aerial route but cannot connect clearly as he ends up giving an easy catch to Suryakumar Yadav. An end of a fine innings.
RCB: 187/2 (15 Overs)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru have lost Virat Kohli and then their skipper Rajat Patidar. With limited time at the crease, RCB batters Jitesh Sharma and Tim David have to go on the counter-attack to take their team towards a massive total.
RCB: 201/3 (17 Overs)
Jitesh Sharma and Tim David have decided to take on the MI bowlers especially the medium-pace of Hardik Pandya. David is known to hit out of the ground and Wankhede being a small one, watch out in the stands there. Big two overs coming up.
RCB: 217/3 (18 Overs)
Royal Challengers Bengaluru end with 240 on the board. That's a massive total especially with the start that was given to them by Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. Rajat Patidar then launched in the attack with maximums as Tim David ended with cherry on the top.
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Chase begins with MI openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton at the crease as RCB open with Jacob Duffy.
Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma have been watchful and only put the bad balls away. Both the openers need to start with a positive mindset and give their side a good start as they chase down 241.
MI: 21/0 (2 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Rohit Sharma was seen struggling with something during the play and now it seems it's got worse as physio comes to attend him. Word from the field is that Virat Kohli is also away from the action with ankle injury.
MI: 56/0 (5 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Rohit Sharma wont continue and it seems the veteran batter has seen enough and walks off the field which seems like a hamstring injury. Not good news this. Suryakumar Yadav has walked into the crease.
MI: 62/0 (6 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickleton fell in the first 10 overs of the run-chase as RCB gained back some of the momentum. Rohit has walked back to the pavilion and seems like he won't be returning to action anytime soon.
MI: 84/2 (9 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav eye big overs as they look to get near the total of 241 posted by RCB. Still way far off and few dot balls and wickets could swing the momentum in Bengaluru's favour.
MI: 108/2 (11 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Tough task for MI now with the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav. Too much to ask from Hardik Pandya and rest of the MI batters with the required run-rate climbing up.
MI: 124/3 (14 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Mumbai Indians need 94 runs in 30 balls and have six wickets in hand. Another disappointing display from their star batters including Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. Seems like nothing is falling in place for them at the moment.
MI: 147/4 (15 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Mumbai Indians need 84 runs in 24 balls and have four wickets in hand. Their Impact Player, Sherfane Rutherford is in at the crease but he has not come flying out of the blocks. MI have not attacked the RCB spinners as it happened with the latter's case.
MI: 155/5 (16 Overs)
RCB: 240/4 (20 Overs)
Mumbai Indians are on the verge of a defeat as RCB look to close out the game. Sherfane Rutherford is making sure some of the crowd that has remained to watch the match, get entertained.
Victory for RCB! Rutherford smacks the final delivery for six but it does not matter as the defending champs pick another victory as Mumbai's inconsistent IPL 2026 form continues.
Yes (lost too many wickets) and at the same point of time, I think we conceded way too many (runs) as well. I think that was always going to be catch-up. I think in the last couple of games, as a bowling unit or even as a batting unit, we’ve been catching up in the game rather than leading the game. We really need to reflect, really need to see what best we can do and how we can get that momentum and that click which we require. We have a couple of days off from here and we will play again. To be very honest, now a lot of things need to be rethought. Definitely, it’s not working. A couple of games we have won the toss, but maybe we need to see what other options we have as a batting group or bowling group. Looking at the kind of wicket it’s playing, if we can bat well, that would be good. We still need to play good cricket, we need to bat well, we need to bowl well. If we do that, then irrespective of the toss, we will be fine. That’s what we are planning and talking about, how do we get some momentum in the powerplay. Because if you see, in both batting and bowling, we are kind of trying to catch up in the powerplay. As you said, a lot of options will be asked and explored. We will see what we can do in the next game. When we got him (Rutherford), it was always exciting for us. We always knew the kind of potential and the kind of power he has. The way he batted gives us extra cushion and at the same time confidence that if we want to make some changes or see what the team requires, we can definitely do that because of the way he’s batting.
That's it from us! Big win for RCB but MI need to buck up or else it will be another disappointing season for them.
