And that's Stumps on Day 1, and it has been an absorbing day of Test cricket. Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first on the same surface that was used for the first Test, and were in early trouble with Jack Leach removing both Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique. However,  Saim Ayub and Kamran Ghulam stitched an important partnership to lead the Pakistan fightback, which was then taken over by Mohammad Rizwan. Pakistan Vs England 2nd Test, Day 1 - Century Alert

Debutant Kamran Ghulam slammed a maiden Test century (102 off 192), reaching the mark with a four off Joe Root in the 74th over. He is in an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 36 (79) with a somewhat fidgety Mohammad Rizwan (13 off 44).

It's Tea time in Multan. The session belonged to Pakistan despite losing the wicket opener Saim Ayub (77 off 160). With spin not working, Ben Stokes stuck with Matthew Potts and the hard work paid (2/22 in 9 overs), and thanks to fine field placing. Ayub tried a drive, and straight to silly mid-off. Caught by Stokes himself. And that broke a 149-run stand at the stroke of tea break. Saud Shakeel, another left-hander was giving debutant Kamran Ghulam (75 off 145) company in the middle Stokes, back from convalescent, has so far sent down five overs without success.

Session numbers: 28 overs, 94 runs at 3.36 and one wicket.

Pakistan Vs England 2nd Test, Day 1: Century Stand

Two unheralded batters dominated the opening day's play in Multan as Pakistan fought back from 19/2 to breach the 100-run mark. Saim Ayub was the first to reach fifty, then debutant Saim Ayub became the 41st Pakistani to post a Test half-century. They have stitched a century stand for the third wicket in 200-odd balls.

Pakistan: 120/2 in 44 overs.

One intriguing morning session in Multan. A few days back, batters dominated bowlers on a flat top with the visitors punishing flabbergasted hosts in a high scoring match. That same pitch is being used for the second Test, and as expected, spin is already in play. Jack Leach claimed two early wickets but a 60-run third wicket-wicket stand between opener Saim Ayub (40 off 83) and debutant Kamran Ghulam (29 off 56) has revived the Pakistani innings.

10 overs of spin in the first 15 overs in the first hour of play on Day 1 of the second Pakistan vs England Test in Multan. Pakistan have lost Abdullah Shafique and skipper Shan Masood, both to left-arm spinner Jack Leach. The embattled hosts, who extraordinarily lost the first Test, will have four spinners when their turn comes. The second match is completely in contrast to what had happened at this venue a few days back. Pakistan were 42/2 in 15 overs.

Both teams already revealed their Playing 11s a day before the match. Ben Stokes returned to the England side as their skipper after fully recovering from an injury. Pakistan, on the other hand, have taken some drastic steps and have 'rested' the big guns like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Naseem Shah.

Pakistan had become the first team in Test cricket's history to lose by an innings despite scoring over 500 runs when England inflicted an embarassing defeat to the Shan Masood-led side.
