Maguire, though, is still a regular on the international front with England and their boss Gareth Southgate. In their recent 3-1 friendly win over Scotland, Maguire's own goal was criticised by critics back in England and the criticism did not go down well with the England boss.
Gareth Southgate backed Maguire, saying the treatment that he receives is beyond anything that he's ever seen.
Speaking after the match, Southgate called the treatment of Maguire 'ridiculous' and called the English defender a stalwart of the country.
Maguire scored a 67th minute own goal after coming on as a second-half substitute against Scotland.
“There has been ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time. It’s a joke. I’ve never known a player treated way he is by our own pundits. It’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen. He's been an absolute stalwart for us in the second most successful team for decades. He's been an absolute key part of that,” said Southgate.
Southgate praised England's game against the Scots at Hampden Park.
“Really pleased. I thought we were excellent in all phases of the game right from the start. We wanted to control the game by using the ball well and I thought we did that well. Today the players one to 11, and the subs, it was one of those days when they all did well,” Southgate added.
Goals from Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane were enough for the Three Lions to secure a famous win over their 'rivals'. Scotland's only goal came from Maguire's own goal in the 67th minute.
