England Vs Australia, ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: AUS End ENG's Title Defence With 33-Run Win - As It Happened

After suffering defeats in their first two games, Australia are peaking at the right time in the 2023 ODI World Cup. They are getting better with the ball in every game and their latest victims were defending champions and oldest rivals England, whose title defence has now officially ended with their sixth loss in the competition. The red-hot leggie Adam Zampa did the star turn for Australia with an outstanding spell, returning remarkable figures of 10-21-3 to stifle English batters and take his team to a 33-run victory. England were bowled out for 253 in response to Australia's 286. Earlier, despite losing the toss, Australia managed to post a stiff total of 286 on the board, with Marnus Labuschagne top scoring with 71. 10:20pm: ENG 253 all out; AUS Win!
And that's it. Josh Hazlewood dismisses Adil Rashid and with that, Australia have officially knocked out defending champions England in the group stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup. It ended up being a much closer contest than expected, as the English lower-order put up a fight in the last few overs. But the Aussies proved too good and have notched up their fifth straight win.  

9:38pm: ENG 187/7; Overs 31-40 Highlights
Zampa has done it again. The Aussie leg-spinner has produced a superb spell to leave England tottering. Zampa bagged the prized scalp of Ben Stokes and also dislodged a set Moeen Ali as Australia lost their way in the middle overs. Captain Cummins topped it off with Liam Livingstone's wicket to take his team just three wickets away from another big win.    

8:45pm: ENG 128/4; Overs 21-30 Highlights
And Australia have come roaring back with two key wickets. Captain Pat Cummins broke the burgeoning partnership between Malan and Stokes, dismissing Malan for 50. Leggie Adam Zampa then accounts for England skipper Jos Buttler to leave the defending champions four down. Stokes is still at the crease, and Moeen Ali is batting alongside.

8:10pm: ENG 82/2; Overs 11-20 Highlights
A healthy partnership is developing between two senior pros of the English team. Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes have compiled 44 more runs in these 10 overs without losing a wicket. Though they have not batted aggresively, they have taken their side to safety and will look to accelerate later.

7:22 PM: ENG - 38/2; Overs 1-10 Highlights
Mitchell Starc claimed a wicket of the first ball to dismiss Jonny Bairstow. Joe Root was dropped by Marcus Stoinis but that the Englishman couldn't capitalise as he was sent back by Starc. Dawid Malan was joined by Ben Stokes at the crease as the duo look to chase down the target of 287.

5:59 PM: AUS - 286 All Out; Overs 41-50 Highlights
Chris Woakes plucked four wickets for England as they bowled out Australia for 286 in 49.3 overs. Adam Zampa made a quickfire 29 to give some impetus to the Men In Yellow. Cameron Green made a defiant 47 whereas Marcus Stoinis too got a start but was out eventually. England's bowlers were well supported by their fielders as England look to chase down the target.

5:09 PM: AUS - 220/5; Overs 31-40 Highlights
English pacer Mark Wood broke the 61-run stand by trapping Marnus Labuschagne in front for 71. Cameron Green survived a close run-out chance on 45, Marcus Stoinis hit a huge six off Rashid as Australia look to post a decent total on the board.

4:11 PM: AUS - 153/4; Overs 21-30 Highlights
Adil Rashid struck in his 2nd over by dismissing Steve Smith for 44 and also dismissed Josh Inglis for 3. Marnus Labuschagne reached his 10th half-century and is joined by Cameron Green who are trying to build on a decent score after losing wickets midway.

3:34 PM: AUS - 100/2; Overs 11-20 Highlights
After losing early wickets, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have started the repairing job for the Aussies. The duo have milked runs at ease. England appealed for a LBW but the DRS decision did not go their way. The Oz pair have put up a 50-plus run stand as England bowlers eye a breakthrough.

2:55 PM: AUS - 48/2; Overs 1-10 Highlights
Travis Head played his type of attacking cricket and soon lost his wicket to Chris Woakes. David Warner survived after a close LBW call from Willey, but could not continue for long as Chris Woakes dismissed him also for 15 runs. Both openers got dismissed by Chris Woakes. Marnus Labuschangne and Steven Smith are at the pitch trying to rebuild the innings. English bowlers have bowled brilliantly in the first powerplay and only 48 runs were added by the Aussie batters with te loss of two wickets. 

2:05 pm: Australia start batting
Travis Head and David Warner opened the batting innings for Australia and David Willey started the bowling attack for England. Head pushed the first delivery towards the square point region and got off the mark with a double. He smashed a boundary on the fifty delivery and took a single on the last delivery. 9 runs from the first over of David Willey.

It was wonderful to take a break from the game before returning to practise. Playing against Australia is always fun; there's a lot to play for, some pride to be had, and a Champions Trophy spot to be had. We're on the same team.

Pat Cummins: We were batting, so we weren't too concerned about losing the toss. Our opening batsmen are looking strong; Stoinis and Cam Green replace Maxwell and Marsh in the XI. This clash always has a little heat to it; it's a terrific time to play them, and I'm looking forward to

Reigning champions England, are at the bottom of the points table and are playing for pride. David Willey has announced his retirement post the tournament as the Three Lions look to salvage some pride. Jos Buttler's captaincy is on the line and will hope they do some damage to their rivals, Australia by crushing their semi-final hopes. The Aussies, are on fire in this tournament despite defeats to India and South Africa. David Warner is on song but his opening partner Mitchell Marsh has headed home for 'personal reasons'. Another victory tonight and the five-time champions could be dreaming of yet another World Cup semi-final appearance.
