India succumbed to a 100-run defeat against England in the second ODI match at the Lord's, London early Friday morning. India needed 247 runs to beat Jos Buttler & Co. and claim the series, but the hosts hit back with some vengeance to level the series. The series will be decided Sunday at Old Trafford, Manchester. India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first. Virat Kohli returned for India, and replaced Shreyas Iyer. England were unchanged.
Chasing England's 246 for a series win, India could manage only 146 runs in 38.5 overs with identical 29s off 44 balls each from Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja being the top score. And doing the damage was Reece Topley's pace and swing. The pacer returned with figures of 6/24 in 9.5 overs -- best figures by an England bowler in ODI cricket.
India's top-five -- Rohit Sharma (0 off 10), Shikhar Dhawan (9 off 26), Rishabh Pant (0 off 5), Virat Kohli (16 off 25) and Suryakumar Yadav (27 off 29) -- failed to contribute but tail-ender Mohammed Shami played an entertaining 23 off 28.
Earlier, India dismissed England for 246 all out in 49 overs with Yuzvendra Chahal claiming four wickets for 47, India's best figures at the venue. Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each, while Mohammed Shami and Prasidh Krishna got apiece. Ravindra Jadeja was the sixth bowler employed by Rohit Sharma.
After a promising start, England lost quick wickets in the middle overs. But Moeen Ali (47 off 64) and David Willey (41 off 49) added 62 runs in 78 balls for the seventh wicket to give the score some respectability. And it proved more than enough.
Jonny Bairstow (23 off 33) and Jason Roy (38 off 38) added 41 runs in 53 balls for the opening wicket. Then, Bairstow was involved in a 31-run stand with Joe Root (11 off 21). Test captain Ben Stokes and skipper Jos Buttler managed only 21 and 4 runs respectively. Liam Livingstone scored a fluent run-a-ball 33. At the halfway stage, the hosts were 121/5.
