Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja stitched a 222-run stand for the sixth wicket to help India fight back from 98/5 on Day 1 of the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. At the close of play on Monday, India were 338/7 in 73 overs with Jadeja and Mohammed Shami unbeaten on 83 off 163 and 0 off 11 respectively.
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl first. Then his bowlers took over even as rain played its part, stopping the game before lunch. James Anderson and Matthew Potts talked with the new ball, but India dominated the post-lunch session thanks to a sensational knock from Pant, who scored his fifth Test ton, and Jadeja's vigil. Pant finally got out for 146 off 111. There was very little for new India captain Jasptri Bumrah to do on Day 1. He will be a busy man though on the following days.
