ENG Vs NED, ICC Cricket World Cup 2023: England Thrash Netherlands To Revive Champions Trophy 2025 Qualification Hopes - As It Happened

Ben Stokes' attacking century was well complemented by bowlers as England thrashed the Netherlands by a 160-run margin and stay in the hunt for a place in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. All-rounder Stokes, who missed the initial part of the tournament through injury, made sure that he left his mark as he scored a fiery knock (108). He was well complemented by Dawid Malan (87) and Chris Woakes (51) as the Lions posted a mammoth 339/9 in their 50 overs. In reply, the Dutch batters never got going as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Teja Nidamanuru was the top-scorer for the Dutch with 41 in what was a sorry looking scorecard. For England, David Willey scalped two wickets (2/19) whereas Moeen Ali (3/42) and Adil Rashid (3/54) too contributed with the ball. "I'm more pleased for us to get a victory over the line, it's been a tough World Cup and it's nice to get back to winning ways. I use the scoreboard as my friend a lot. Whenever pressure feels like it's building or if it is, I just look up and you realise you've got more time than you think. We (Woakes and himself) built a good partnership, whenever there was pressure building I had a look at the scoreboard and reminded myself there was a lot of time remaining (in the innings). Tried to take it deep and cash in later. He (Woakes) is a genuine all-rounder for us, he has been a great cricketer for England over the last 2-3 years and today he proved it."

Jos Buttler: "Absolutely desperate for the win. Malan got us off to a flier. Partnership between Stokes and Woakes was fantastic. Anytime you need someone to stand up, he (Stokes) seems to be the guy to do that. Smart cricket between him and Woakes. Thought it was a good score. But everyone who batted said it was a good pitch. The toss - you got to play good cricket as well. Can look back and say might've done different but you have to play good cricket too. He's a class cricketer (Woakes), been a brilliant performer for us. It was high-class swing bowling, deserved more than one wicket that he got. Huge game (Pakistan). At the end of a disappointing tournament it means a lot."

Scott Edwards: "We didn't start well with the ball, let them get away from us. Bowlers did well to drag them back, but they got away again towards the end for a slightly above par total. Then same old story with the bat. Was a pretty good wicket. We held them well till the 43rd over. Maybe we could've tried a couple of different plans. But credit to them, they batted well. Need to find a balance chasing a 340 score. We'll talk about it and figure it out what we could've done better. Like you said we've been good in patches. Just got to do it for longer. Going to be an amazing atmosphere there (in Bangalore), boys are looking forward to it."

The Netherlands lost five wickets as they ended up on the losing side with a 160-runs defeat at the hands of England. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid grabbed three wickets each as the Dutch batters could not handle the spinning duo. For the Netherlands, Teja Nidamanuru (41) was the only one who shone with the bat whereas others around him faltered.

Wesley Barresi (37) got run out while taking a run. Moeen Ali's excellence on the field was enough for Barresi to walk back to the pavilion. His knock of 37 included three fours and one maximum.
