Welcome to the live coverage of the Indian Super League 2024-25 where Mumbai City FC host Punjab FC today.
Punjab FC have cruised to four victories from seven games to accumulate 12 points and be at the fifth spot in the standings, whereas Mumbai City FC are ninth in the table with 10 points to their name.
The gap amongst teams is so narrow at this point that a victory here can propel the Petr Kratky-coached team above Punjab FC and bring them straight back into the reckoning for the top-six.
Played: 2
Mumbai City FC: 2 (5 goals)
Punjab FC: 0 (3 goals)
We are about to begin. The national anthem part is done and the captains have chosen sides. All set to go then.
We are done with the countdown and the referee sounds the whistle. Mumbai City FC in their home colours of blue will go left to right. Punjab in red will move the other way.
2' Mumbai make an entry into the box but a wonderful inch-perfect tackle from Nikhil Prabhu blunts the attack.
Not much comes out of the corner for the hosts. A good start so far for Mumbai City.
7' Punjab FC's defence consistently getting tested from both flanks. So far the Shers have managed to keep the attacks out with timely blocks and tackles but for how long can they keep doing it?
9' A bit of fumble from the Mumbai City FC defence and that could have been costly for the hosts. Filip Mrzljak gets the ball just outside the box and shoots an away curler which misses the goalpost.
15' Punjab are now lurking in the Mumbai half. They have got some shots on the goal from long range but have not been able to keep any of them on target. Mumbai consistently fumbling in midfield to lose the ball but their defence is not allowing the Shers easy entry points.
20' Jon Toral takes a bit of time in the box and he is surrounded by the red shirts of Punjab players and Toral does not have enough space to get his shot. A corner for Mumbai City FC.
21' Mumbai City FC miss! That could have been the opener but the Highlanders miss the goalpost by inches. R Kumar the Punjab goalkeeper jumped high but could not collect the ball and it falls towards Mehtab Singh who is in an awkward position to take the shot and he fails to keep it on target. A little deflection tried in the end at the goalmouth but misses the net by a whisker.
26' Another missed chance for Mumbai City FC. A beautiful cross by Singh from the left flank into the box for Nikolaos Karelis whose header is off-target.
27' Another brilliant cross from Bipin Singh and this time it finds Lallianzuala Chhangte in the box but Chhangte is perhaps not fully balanced and his shot goes right into the lap of Ravi Kumar, the Punjab goallie.
38' Brilliant save from Ravi Kumar. That demanded some saving and Ravi has made a brilliant dive to his right and parried the ball powerfully away from the box. That was a very powerful shot from Jayesh Rane from outside the box but Mumbai City once again have been denied.
45+1' First goal for Punjab FC!!!
What a time to score and Punjab are ahead. They are celebrating and why shouldn't they. Brilliant from Pulga Vidal who gets the ball outside the box and does not bother to go close. Takes his shot from outside the box and beats Mumbai City FC goalkeeper Lachenpa to his right. Against the run of play to say the least.
Half-time whistle sounded and after all the attacks made by Mumbai City FC, it is Punjab FC who will go into the break with the lead. Pulga Vidal the scorer, right at the stroke of half-time.
We are back after a short break and the second half has begun. Punjab are leading 1-0 even though Mumbai City looked like the more dominating side in the first half. Let us see what the second half is in store for us.
53' Penalty for Punjab FC!!! Filip Mrzljak has conceded a penalty for Mumbai City FC and this will be the chance for Punjab to double their lead.
53' Punjab FC score second goal!!!
Luka Majcen sends Lachenpa the other way and Punjab FC have doubled their lead. As easy as it gets for Majcen and Lachenpa has no chance. Punjab are now two up and the Mumbai crowd is stunned.
61' Missed chance for Mumbai!!! Jon Toral has hit it right on the sidebar. Really unfortunate for Mumbai City FC and Punjab get really really lucky. Brilliant shot from Toral from outside the box towards the far post but nothing comes out of it.
71' Punjab FC make a good attack following a fast break situation but Mushaga Bakenga's shot is off-target.
The hosts are continously keeping the pressure up on Punjab who are relying on counters.
73' Another chance missed for Mumbai City FC. They have been a bit unfortunate tonight and here is another chance that goes a begging. Hmingthanmawia Ralte takes the shot from the edge of the box and it is just a little high.
77' Mumbai City FC are claiming a goal and the referee is not bothered though.
Replays show it was indeed a goal! Mumbai City FC have been robbed a goal, say the commentators on air and the side has all the reason in the world to be disappointed. The fans are furious too.
81' A long discussion between the on-field referee and the sideline referee. And they have decided to not give the goal as the game was allowed to run well after the decision. Really, really unlucky for Mumbai City FC.
85' Punjab FC score third goal!!!
Mumbai City Fc have been absolutely shell shocked. This time it is Mushaga Bakenga who provide an top class finish and scores from what seemed like a difficult position. Bakenga collects the pass inside the box from Ninthoinganba Meetei. He then swivels and shoots without moving and that is something that the defender was not expecting. Third goal for Punjab and Mumbai are headed for a big big loss.
90' Seven minutes added to the final time. Can Mumbai finally reap at least some reward for their hardwork? Seems unlikely.
Referee sounds the full-time whistle and Punjab FC have absolutely thrashed Mumbai City FC tonight.
A difficult loss for Mumbai City FC who tried hard all through the match but just could not score. And the one time they did, the referee just could not see it. Punjab on the other hand worked on counters and scored thrice out of the four shots that they got on target. A good result for Punjab and they would be very happy with that.
Punjab FC jump up to the fourth place level on points with third placed NorthEast United FC and just two points away from leaders Mohun Bagan.
Mumbai City FC stay stuck at the tenth spot which is fourth from bottom.
That was it from our ISL coverage tonight. We will see you tomorrow with another exciting match. Good Night!
