Indian Cricket's two flagship events - the Indian Premier League and the Women's Premier League - were among the major searches made from within the peripheries of the country in the year 2023, reveals Google in their year-end Google's Year in Search review
Google's year-end search results reveal that Indian Premier League and Women's Premier League were among the most searched sports events from within the national boundaries. As part of the Google's Year in Search review, the two flagship Indian cricket competitions pipped some of the other high-profile events, including the Indian Super League, the Asian Games 2023, and, in case of IPL, even the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. India's predilection toward cricket was laid bare by the year-end search analysis, with eight of the top ten most-searched events from the country in the last year being directly linked to the sport. Leading the way was the month-and-a-half long IPL that took place in the former half of the year. Not too distant from the IPL was its sister event, the WPL, which held its inaugural edition in Match 2023. Five teams partook in the first-ever "Women's IPL", with Mumbai Indians beating Delhi Capitals to become the maiden champions. WPL came in at fourth in Google's Year in Search review for 2023, ahead of the ISL and Asian Games among other tournaments.
Not just tournaments within the country, but those taking place outside the peripheries were also quite popular among the users in India. Evidence toward the same is provided by the Pakistan Super League and SA20 - T20 leagues for Pakistan and South Africa, respectively - which also featured in the top ten alongside the India-based pair.
Both Men's And Women's Cricket World Cups were a part of the ten most-searched sporting events list in India, as was the Asia Cup that India won after beating Sri Lanka. ISL, India's premier football division, and Asian Games were the only non-cricketing events that sneaked onto the chart.
