India 5-3 Germany Hockey Highlights: GER Win Penalty Shootout To Clinch Series After IND Claim Match 2 Via Second-Half Heroics

A clinical Germany never really gave India a chance, drawing first blood in the fourth minute and scoring again at the stroke of half-time to double their lead. India garnered seven penalty corners but could not convert any of them, failing to breach the fortress of German goalkeeper Joshua Onyekwue Nnaji even via Harmanpreet Singh's penalty stroke. Both teams are warming up on the pitch and doing the customary pre-match drills. Team India gets into a huddle. Could there be a change in penalty corner strategy tonight?

Defender Varun Kumar, who is back in the Indian squad after an extended absence owing to sexual harassment allegations against him — of which he has now been cleared — is not a part of the line-up for today's encounter. Here is India's starting XI:-

We are nearing the start of the game. Both teams are out on the pitch and it is a special occasion for Amit Rohidas, who is playing his 200th international match. And it's now time for the national anthems.

After a round of felicitations involving dignitaries from the Indian and German governments, including Union minister of commerce and ministry Piyush Goyal, play is finally underway. India attacking from left to right in the first half.

India get a penalty corner in the fourth minute, but Germany review it straight away. And sure enough, the decision is overturned on video referral as a back stick can be seen on replay. India get a free hit.

Germany score in the seventh minute! And it's Mazkour Elian who capitalizes on counter attack after Abhishek's circle entry in the German D. Mazkour gets a precise pass in the Indian circle and flicks it past Pathak, who has no answer. Germany strike early again.

India get two penalty corners in quick succession, but none of them goes anywhere near the German goal as Harmanpreet's variation pass at the top of the circle is not trapped cleanly. These missed chances could cost India dearly again, like last afternoon.

Another PC for India, and Harmanpreet is waiting at the edge of the circle. One more variation this time, as Amit Rohidas lines up for the flick and passes it to Harmanpreet behind him. The Indian captain takes a low shot but it is blocked by keeper Danneberg well. India still goalless in the series, and the first quarter ends soon after.

The second quarter begins, and Germany miss out on a short corner chance. India press on the counter, and earn a PC of their own. But yet again, it comes to nothing. Shamsher fails to receive the injection cleanly and a German counter ensues, though without fruit.

Yet another PC for India, and the resulting drag-flick is intercepted by the German defence. A re-take is awarded, but the visitors call for the video referral. And the decision stands overturned, Germany get a long corner and keep their referral.

The first half ends with a German press thwarted by India. The sixth consecutive quarter without an Indian goal goes by, but at least they haven't conceded either in this one. Germany retain their 1-0 lead at the interval.

The third quarter begins, and India are now attacking from right to left.

Sukhjeet scores! India finally break the shackles held for six long quarters over two days by Germany. And the Indian forward gets a field goal to boot, something of a rare commodity for the Indian men's hockey team these days. Fellow forward Shilanand Lakra passes it to Sukhjeet inside the German circle, and the latter makes no mistake to draw India level in the 34th minute of the match.

The energy of an Indian goal has rubbed off among spectators. More penetrative runs now coming through, and a penalty corner follows suit. Amit Rohidas on drag-flick duties and though there are a couple of re-awards, no goal for India.

Captain Harmanpreet on the prowl! Finally, the crowd gets what it was long awaiting. The 10th PC for India, and the ace drag-flicker lets rip a strike to the top right corner, and the German keeper for once has no answers. India lead for the first time in this series, and it is also the first PC conversion for the hosts.

Well, well well. What do we have here. India have entirely come into their own in the third quarter, scoring four goals in a space of 11 minutes. Harmanpreet replicates his drag-flick magic in the 43rd minute, seconds after his first goal. And Abhishek then adds the icing on the cake with a smart field goal in the 45th minute to leave the Germans reeling. The third quarter ends, but will it halt India's goal-scoring spree? Perhaps not.

The fourth and final quarter of the match begins. And India's merry run continues. The floodgates have opened, and the fans seem utterly grateful for it. It is Sukhjeet again with a field goal, charging ahead of the German defenders and completing his one-man run with a diving finish past the German goalie. India now five up and have surely sealed the match verdict. Remember, an Indian win will lead to a penalty shootout to decide the series winner. Brace yourself for a fun few minutes!

Germany fetch a short corner for a change in the second half. The corner is re-awarded and then again, but Abhishek comes in the way. No harm done.

Germany pull one back in the 57th minute of the game. And it is that man Mazkour again for them. The 23-year-old receives a well-directed pass inside the Indian circle and slots it into the goal. India still have a three-goal cushion with under three minutes to go.

Germany score again in the dying seconds of the game! Henrik Mertgens is the scorer as India review, albeit unsuccessfully. The goal stands and India end up winning the match by a 5-3 margin. And with that, we have a penalty shootout on our hands.

The shootouts begin. Krishan Pathak in goal for India, and Germany's Florian Sperling converts the first one for the visitors. Harmanpreet now steps up, and tries to take a shot at goal early but is foxed by German custodian Danneberg. Germany have the lead after the first set.

Krishan Bahadur brilliantly saves Mazkour's attempt to put a red against the German card. India then miss on their second attempt too, as Abhishek fails to find the target.

Germany win the penalty shootout 3-1 and clinch the series! Drama in Delhi as Germans are unhappy with a goal given for Aditya Lalage. Goalie Danneberg feels the timer had run out before Lalage sent the ball into the net, but with no advice possible, the goal stands. Nevertheless, Germany convert their next penalty via Hellwig  to emerge victors in the shootout and hence, the series. India' jubilation turns to mild despondence but all in all, the afternoon comes to an entertaining end for the fans at Major Dhyan Chand Stadium.
