India's Tour Of South Africa 2023-24: Sunil Gavaskar Provides Simple Solution To Shubman Gill's Test Woes

Barring a ton against Australia at home in March 2023, young Indian batter Shubman Gill has had a year to forget in Test cricket. Gill's scores from nine other innings in the calendar year paint a telling picture, one of the white ball specialist struggling to come to terms with the differences in conditions when it comes to the red ball. Indian cricketing great Sunil Gavaskar is no stranger to adapting his technique to suit different formats, considering he did so throughout a celebrated career that earned him a place in the sport's pantheon of legends. Gavaskar, in a media appearance, provided a masterful analysis of Gill's Test woes and provided a simple solution for the youngster to consider.

"I think he is playing a bit too aggressively in Test cricket. There is a slight difference when you play Test cricket when compared to T20I and ODI cricket. The difference is in the ball,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"The red ball moves a little more than the white ball in the air and off the pitch as well. It bounces a little more too. He should keep that in mind."

Despite his troubles, Gavaskar retained confidence in Gill, stating that he hopes the youngster can put his issues behind him and get back into match-winning form. 

"Shubman Gill started off his career so well and we praised his shots. We can only hope that he gets back into his form. Hope he trains harder and does well in the future," Gavaskar added.

Gill and India will take on South Africa in the second of two Test matches in South Africa early in the new year, with a win allowing them to leave the country with a tied contest.
