India At Asian Games 2023, Day 8: Avinash Sable Win Gold; Men's Badminton Team Win Silver - As It Happened

India's Avinash Sable clinched gold in the men's 3000m steeplechase whereas Indian badminton team are also locked in a gold medal match against China. Nikhat Zareen won bronze in the Women's 50kg category. Tajinder Pal Singh Toor defended his Asian Games gold medal in Men's Shot Put. Earlier, Kynan Darius Chenai clinched a bronze medal for India in the men's 50m trap event. Golfer Aditi Ashok also won India's first medal on Sunday, a silver in the women's individual round. 7:20 pm: Athletics - Jyothi Yarraji's much deserved silver
DYK -Wu Yanni of China was stopped for a false start during the 100m hurdles finals at the Asian Games 2023. She had even repeated this at the Asian Athletics Championship 2023 in Thailand. In that race, Yarraji had clinched gold. The duo went head-to-head again at the World University Games this year, with the India claiming bronze and the Wu taking silver.

3:01 pm: Women's Hockey - India vs Korea (1-1)
The Indian women's hockey team was held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea but the Savita Punia-led unbeaten side still continued to lead its pool in the Asian Games here on Sunday. Navneet Kaur (44th min) scored the equaliser for the higher-ranked India after Cho Hyejin (12th) had put South Korea ahead at the Gongshu Canal Sports Park Stadium. Thanks to the draw, the Indian team, currently ranked sixth in the world, held onto the top spot in Pool A by goal difference over 12-ranked Korea. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals.

South Korea is awarded a penalty stroke following a stick block by Udita inside the circle. Hyejin converts it effortlessly! India is officially on the path!

After 10 shots, Chenai is fourth and Zoravar is fifth in the men's Trap final. Both struck the target eight times.

12: 45 pm: Women's Boxing 60kg - Jasmine is out!
She unanimously won the first round against her North Korean opponent. However, in round 2, Won battled back and began to assault Jasmine with jabs and blows! Jasmine lost control and became exhausted. The referee interrupted the match when she began to grip the opponent. She is defeated by RSC.

12:32 pm: Update for Archery
Pravin Deotale is third with 237 points after 24 of 72 arrows in the men's compound individual qualification round. Meanwhile, Abhishek Verma is ranked 15th, while Prathamesh Jawkar is ranked 16th. In the meanwhile, India is third in the men's team qualifying event.

Ankita Bhakat is 16th after 24 of 72 arrows in the women's recurve individual qualifying, Simranjeet Kaur is 27th, Bhaan Kaur is 32nd, and Prachi Singh is 40th. Meanwhile, India is ranked seventh in team qualifying.

11:55 am: Parveen through to 57kg semis!
Parveen won her 57kg quarterfinal against Uzbek Sitora after the judges decided in her favour in round 3. She hung on in the final round and secured a decisive victory. She has advanced to the 57kg semi-finals!

11:53 am: Parveen gets Round 1!
Parveen hits her opponent with several solid jabs. But Sitora is equal to her and lands a few hits on the Indian as well. Parveen is a touch too quick, and she appears to have done enough to win the opening round of this women's 57kg quarterfinal! The judges unanimously ruled in favour of Parveen.

11:00 am: Men's golf has had a poor showing!
India's men's golf performance has been dismal, in striking contrast to Aditi Ashok's exploits in the women's tournament. Anirban Lahiri is now ranked 12th, Khalin Joshi is ranked 27th, SSP Chowrasia is ranked 29th, and Shubhankar Sharma is ranked 32nd. Indian men are fifth in the team event.

10:20 am: Update for Shooting
Prithviraj Tondaiman, Kynan Chenai and Zoravar Singh Sandhu claim the men's trap shooting gold medal.

10:15 am: Update for Golf
Aditi Ashok slipped up on the final day, carding a topsy-turvy 73 to settle with a silver medal. Despite the disappointment, she did give India a first medal in women's golf at the Asian Games. She started with a commanding seven-stroke lead, but her advantage evaporated thanks to four bogeys and a double bogey, then subsequently finished behind Thailand's Arpichaya Yubol. South Korea's Hyunjo Yoo took the bronze.

9:55 am: India claims silver in women's trap team
Indian trap shooters have won silver in the women's trap team event. The trio of Rajeshwari Kumari, Keer Manisha, and Preeti Rajak earned 337 points, finishing ahead of Kazakhstan (334) and behind China (355).

9:30 am: Shooting: India in medal-winning position!
This is fascinating! Prithviraj Tondaiman's 24/25 has propelled India to the gold medal position in the men's Trap team event. However, the difference between the first and second (Kuwait) is only one point. This is going to come down to the wire.

9:14 am: Golf Updates
In terms of the Indian men's golf team's performance, they are now in seventh position, 12 strokes behind Hong Kong, who are third. Meanwhile, in the individual rankings, Anirban Lahiri is ranked T13, followed by SSP Chawrasia at T25, KH Joshi at T28, and Shubhankar Sharma, who is ranked 32nd.

9:10 am: Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh came out on top
In their mixed doubles squash Pool A match, India's Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Singh defeated South Korea's Hwayeong Eum and Jaejin Yoo 2-0. The Indians won the first game 11-2 and the second game 11-5.

9:00 am: Aditi Ashok's advantage is shrinking!
Aditi's advantage has shrunk to one stroke with three holes left. The gold medal she had her heart set on seemed to be slipping away. Aditi missed a regulation putt that she had been smoothly putting away the day before, with the ball stopping just centimetres shy from the cup, highlighting the tight margins in golf. She makes a painful bogey on the 15th hole. There are only three more holes to go.

India has also dropped out of the top three women's teams.

8:55 am: Setback for Aditi Ashok
Aditi Ashok had a setback on the 14th hole when she missed a pretty straightforward putt from approximately 10 yards away, eventually salvaging a par with a tap-in. With only four holes remaining, Aditi must keep her concentration. Aditi showed tenacity on the fifteenth hole, producing a fantastic recovery from a bunker with a smart loft, setting herself for a chance at par. Xiyu Lin of China, on the other hand, hit a superbly measured putt for a birdie on the fifteenth hole, narrowing the deficit to just two strokes behind Aditi. Meanwhile, Arpichaya, who was also aiming for a birdie, misses her chance and settles for a par.

8:15 am: Amlan Borgohain qualifies for men's 200m final
Amlan Borgohain advances to the men's 200m final after coming third in his heat with a time of 21.08. The Indian ran well and was in a close battle with Japan's Shoto Uno, who finished second in his heat. Uno recorded 20.87 and managed to keep up with Amlan, who was initially second, but the Indian ran out of steam there.

7:45 am: Shooting Update
In the fourth round of the men's trap event, India's Zoravar Singh Sandhu achieves a magnificent 25. He is presently ranked third on the standings. Prithviraj Tondaiman, who also scored 25, is ranked 11th. India is presently in second place in the team event.

7:45 am: Jyothi misses!
Jyothi Yarraji did not qualify for the women's 200m final. Her time of 23.78 placed her third in her heat. According to the qualification regulations, the first two in each heat qualify, and the next two quickest also progress to the final! Huang Guifen (23.54) of China and Thi Nhi Yen Tran (23.75) of Vietnam fill their spots!

7:39 am: Nandini improves on her first jump
Nandini improved on her first leap by landing 5.94 metres on her third try, keeping her second place. Swapna, on the other hand, stumbled in her second leap, covering only 3.36 metres. She regained her footing in the third try, but only achieved 5.71 metres. Nandini is presently ranked third in the Heptathlon standings, with a total of 831 points, while Swapna is ranked seventh. Now it's time for the javelin.

7:18 am: Jyothi Yarraji needs to wait
Jyothi Yarraji went off quickly as the whistle blew, but lost steam in the final stages of the race. She comes third in the women's 200m Heat with a time of 23.78, after China's Lu Yuting (23.67) and Kazakh athlete Olga Safronova (23.71). According to the qualification regulations, the first two in each heat qualify, and the next two quickest also progress to the final! As a result, Yarraji will have to wait.

7:15 am: Archery
Jyothi Vennam of India got off to a terrific start on the opening day of the competition, leaping to the top place in compound qualification. Vennan finished with a score of 236 after shooting 24 arrows. Aditi Swami is ranked seventh, and Parneet Kaur is ranked fifteenth. Avneet Kaur ranks 25th with 225 points.

7:04 am: Megha Pradeep into canoe sprint semis
Megha Pradeep qualified for the canoe sprint 200m women's semifinals after coming fifth in her heats with a time of 56.705 seconds.

6:57 am: Women's Heptathlon - Long Jump (after first attempt)
Nandini Asagara of India got her season's best result in the women's heptathlon long jump event, leaping 5.91 metres on her first try. This puts her in second place, with just Ekaterina Veronina of Uzbekistan ahead of her. Nandini achieved a distance of 5.77 metres on her second attempt. Swapna Barman, an Indian participant, accomplished a first jump of 5.63 metres.

6:44 am: Women's Heptathlon - Long Jump
Nandini Agasara finished second in the round with a 5.91 on her first long jump attempt. Meanwhile, Swapna Barman's time has not yet arrived.
