Asian Games 2023, September 21: Contrasting Fortunes For Football Teams; Women's Cricket Team In Semis - As It Happened

Indian women's football team lost to Chinese Taipei 2-1 as a late defensive error allowed the home side to score the winner. Anju Tamang had given the lead for India at the start of the second half but Chinese Taipei scored in the 69th and 87th minute to clinch the win.

The Indian men's football team edged out Bangladesh in a veritable do-or-die encounter on Thursday afternoon to stay in contention of progressing. Captain Sunil Chhetri scored from the spot in the 85th minute to give India the lead and the win. 

Earlier in the day, the Indian women's cricket team marched into the semifinals of the event after a rained-out quarterfinal match against Malaysia. The batters, led by opener Shafali Verma, posted an imposing 173 in the first innings, but the match was called off after incessant rain just two balls into the second innings. India qualified by virtue of being the higher-ranked team.
