La Liga champions Real Madrid were halted by Girona to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid. After a 0-0 stalemate in the first half, Carlo Ancelotti’s side took the lead through Vinicius Junior as Fede Valverde’s low ball inside the penalty area was netted in by the Brazilian in the 70th minute. Visitors Girona got a chance to fight back as a penalty was awarded for Marco Asensio’s handball. The 36-year-old Cristhian Stuani made no mistake from 12 yards, sending Thiabut Courtious the wrong way and scoring the equalizer in the 80th minute. Real Madrid did find a second goal through Rodrygo but the goal was ruled out because of Rodrygo’s foul on Paulo Gazzaniga. The hosts ended the game with 10 men as Toni Kroos’ foul in the 91st minute saw him pick up the second yellow card of the game. Real Madrid now have a one point lead at the top of the table.
