After two consecutive losses against India and Zimbabwe, Pakistan have registered their first win of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in convincing fashion, beating Netherlands by six wickets at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Sunday. Netherlands won the toss and decided to bat but excellent balling from Pakistan meant that Netherlands could only manage 91 runs at the loss of 9 wickets after 20 overs. Right-handed batsman Collin Ackermann was the highest run-getter for Netherlands, scoring run-a-ball 27. The rest of the batting lineup fumbled and failed miserably against a sturdy Pakistan bowling. Shadab Khan picked up three wickets (3/22), dismissing opener Max O’Dowd, Tom Cooper and Ackermann. With 92 to chase, Pakistan captain Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan started the run chase before Azam was run out by Roelof van der Merwe. From there on, Fakhar Zaman and Rizwan had a 37 run stand as both batsmen looked to stabilize the innings and take their team home. Zaman scored 20 of 16 balls and fell prey to Brandon Glover. Opener Rizwan was the anchor of the run chase scoring 49 runs of 39 balls, hitting five boundaries in the process. Rizwan was shown the way to pavilion when Pakistan were at 83 runs but the win was well within reach. Shadab Khan hit the winning shot to help Pakistan get off the mark in the T20 WC. This huge win lifts the Pakistani spirits and gives them two valuable points on the points table as they remain alive in the tournament.
