Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement just one day after being disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 for being overweight in her 50kg freestyle category before her gold medal bout.
In a significant embarrassment for the country, Antim Panghal and her entire entourage are being deported from Paris due to a major disciplinary breach. The young wrestler handed her official accreditation card to her sister, who was caught by security while leaving the Games Village. Panghal had been eliminated from the Paris Olympics after losing her opening bout in the women's 53kg category earlier in the day.
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu came very close to winning a second Olympic medal. However, a missed lift in her final attempt resulted in her finishing in fourth place in the women's 49kg event. Mirabai, who turns 30 on Thursday, lifted a total of 199kg (88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk) at the South Paris Arena. This was 3kg less than her total lift at the Tokyo Olympics (202 kg), where she won a silver medal.
Vinesh Phogat announced retirement on Wednesday morning and ended her 23-year-long dream of an Olympic medal without completing it. Now, all the hopes are on the CAS verdict.
Indian golfers will kickstart the Indian action in women's individual stroke play Round 2 on Day 13 of the Paris Olympics 2024. Diksha Dagar and Aditi Ashok will compete in women's golf. Then Jyothi Yarraji will compete in the women's 100m hurdles repechage round at 2:05 pm. Wrestlers Anshu Malik and Aman Sehrawat will start their respective campaigns in 57kg freestyle at 3:00 pm. The fight for the gold medal seems to be between Van Rouwendaal and Johnson, who are now eight seconds ahead of Ginevra Taddeucci (ITA) in third place. There are two laps remaining, which is just under four kilometres, but the leading pair looks very strong.
After a monumental two-hour swim in the River Seine, Van Rouwendaal broke away from Johnson and Taddeucci in the final stretch to touch the time board with vigour. She is now an Olympic champion for a second time!
Van Rouwendaal previously won gold in this event at Rio 2016. She is now the first athlete ever to win two Olympic gold medals in marathon swimming and has earned three total medals in that discipline of aquatics (gold in 2016, silver in Tokyo 2020, gold in Paris 2024). Johnson's silver marks the best result for an Australian athlete in marathon swimming, while Taddeucci earns a well-deserved bronze.
Indian athlete Jyothi Yarraji is in action in the women's 100m hurdles repechage round.
Indian hurdler Jyothi Yarraji's Olympic campaign came to an end today as she finished fourth in her repechage heat. Despite a strong performance, Yarraji's time of 13.17 seconds was not enough to secure one of the two qualifying spots for the semifinals.
Aman Sehrawat and Anshu Malik will represent India on the wrestling mat today at the Paris Olympics. Both wrestlers are set to compete in their respective weight categories and will be looking to make a strong impact for the nation. Check out where and when to watch them.
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat has stormed into the quarterfinals with a dominant performance. Meanwhile, compatriot Anshu Malik's Olympic journey came to an abrupt halt following a defeat in her opening round match.
However, there's still hope for Malik as she can potentially qualify for the repechage if Maroulis reaches the finals.
Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat will square off against Albania's Zelimkhan Abakarov in the quarterfinals of the men's 57kg freestyle category at 3:47 PM IST.

After a lull of over half a century, Indian hockey has finally won back-to-back medals at the Olympics. The men's team on Thursday bagged its second successive Olympic bronze as Harmanpreet Singh and co edged out Spain 2-1 in the third-place match.
All three Olympic records - snatch, clean and jerk and overall - in the women's 59kg weightlifting discipline have been broken today. Ukraine's Kamila Konotop first smashed the snatch record by lifting 104 kg, but her competitors stepped it up by elevating the mark. The record exchanged hands with China's Luo Shifang (105kg) and Canada's Maude Charron (106kg), before Shifang finally ran away with it by lifting 107kg. The Chinese lifter also broke the clean-and-jerk mark with a 134kg effort, taking her overall tally to 241kg, which is a Games record in itself.
Aman Sehrawat, India's lone male wrestler at the Paris Olympics, has been thoroughly outclassed by Japan's Rei Higuchi. The Rio Games silver medallist beats Aman by technical superiority (10-0) in the freestyle 57kg semi-finals to storm into the gold medal round. Aman, meanwhile, will battle for bronze medal tomorrow against Puerto Rico's Darian Cruz.
While all Indian eyes are on Neeraj Chopra's javelin throw final today, there are several other exciting events in athletics with medals up for grabs. Podiums will be decided in the men's 200m, men's 110m hurdles, men's javelin throw, women's 400m hurdles and women's long jump events in the next few hours.
In a closely contested men's Greco-Roman 67kg wrestling final, Saeid Esmaeili emerges with the spoils. The Iranian takes a 6-5 victory on points over Parviz Nasibov of Ukraine to claim the gold medal. Earlier, bronze medals were bagged by Hasrat Jafarov of Azerbaijan and Luis Alberto Orta of Cuba.
Home favourite Benjamin Thomas wins the points race, and thus the men's omnium gold at the Paris Games. Despite a fall, he had two laps on the group for 40 points and added 26 points in sprints, finishing with a total of 164 points. Portugal's Iuri Leitao clinches silver on 153 points with Belgium's Fabio van den Bossche bagging bronze on 131.
We have an incredible result in the men's 200m final. Running in the memory of his late mother, Botswana's Letsile Tebogo has claimed the gold with an African record of 19.46s. Kenny Bednarek takes silver medal with a timing of 19.62, and the highly fancied Noah Lyles has to be content with bronze (19.70s).
When it comes to Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, expect the unexpected. The 27-year-old comes up with a humongous 92.97m throw to not just hit Neeraj Chopra's hopes of a second straight gold medal in the men's javelin throw event, but also shatter the Games record. Neeraj follows up with a season-best effort of 89.45m to be placed second. An Indo-Pakistan duel at the Olympics, that too in athletics. Who would have thought?
And it is the Pakistani athlete who ends up on top in the javelin throw final. Arshad Nadeem's monster 92.97m throw is expectedly the best of the night, and his Olympic record-shattering effort brings him a historic gold medal. This is Pakistan's first medal at the Summer Games in 32 years, after the hockey bronze in 1992.
Resultantly, India's golden spearhead Neeraj Chopra fails to defend his title. He nevertheless claims silver with a best throw of 89.45m, and becomes the first Indian track and field athlete to bag back-to-back Olympic medals. Grenada's Anderson Peters grabs the last podium place with an effort of 88.54m.
In addition to the Indian hockey team winning its second straight bronze medal and Neeraj Chopra claiming silver in the men's javelin throw, several events of interest unfolded. Noah Lyles, who said he tested positive for Covid-19 on the morning of the race, had to be content with bronze as Botswana's Letsile Tebogo won the men's 200m final. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone smashed the world record en route the women's 400m hurdles gold, and Netherlands trumped Germany in a penalty shoot-out for the men's hockey gold.
With that, our coverage for Day 13 of the Paris Olympic Games 2024 ends. We will be back in a few hours with live updates from the quadrennial multi-sport extravaganza. Until then, goodbye.
