Paris Olympics Day 14 Live: What About Phogat?

After knocking the doors of the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), Vinesh Phogat finally see a light as they accepted her application. And, In a major development, after several requests, senior advocate Harish Salve has agreed to represent the Indian wrestler at the court.

The decision came after the Indian contingent struggled to find a legal representation for the hearing, which has been rescheduled to 10 am local (1:30 PM IST) on Friday, August 9.

History-making Pakistan javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem is quite pleased that his rivalry with Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra is becoming as talked about as the cricketing battles between the two feuding neighbours as he believes it will fuel the sporting ambition of youngsters in both the nations.

"The rivalry is there when it comes to cricket matches and other sports, definitely. But at the same time, it is a good thing for youngsters in both countries who are pursuing a sport to follow us and follow their sports icons and bring laurels to their countries," the 27-year-old Nadeem told reporters after becoming the first Pakistani to clinch an individual Olympic gold medal. Superstar javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra's family members are not at all disheartened that he couldn't defend his Olympics gold and instead said that they were proud of his feat of winning a second consecutive medal for the country.

"The environment is joyful in the entire nation, We are very happy that we have won silver medal. This is the hard work of that boy and the nation's blessing is with him that he won medal for the second time," said Chopra's father Satish Kumar.

His mother Saroj Devi added: "He (Neeraj Chopra) has done very well and we will give him a grand welcome upon his return. He loves churma, so, we will make it for him."

Chopra's aunt Kamlesh also lauded his effort.

"We are extremely happy, he (Neeraj Chopra) did his best despite the tough competition. It's not about winning a gold or silver, but about winning a medal, and he did his best," she said. (PTI)

MEDAL ALERT!! Marathon Swimming Winners 

Kristof Rasovszky of Hungary who finished second in Tokyo, claimed the gold in Paris Games 2024 in the marathon swimming in the waters of Seine. He took the lead at the 6.6km mark and didn't look back. German - Oliver Klemet missed the gold by just two seconds bagging silver. And the bronze goes to another Hungarian David Betlehem.

It all began when 29-year-old Vinesh Phogat had been disqualified for being 100 grams overweight ahead of her 50kg category gold medal bout.

However, after some support from people back home in India, Vinesh decided to hang up her boots and announced her retirement. She took to social media platform X to share her decision, stating that she no longer has the strength to continue in the sport.

"Ma, wrestling has won, I have lost. Please forgive me, your dreams and my courage, everything is broken," Vinesh wrote in an emotional post addressed to her mother, Premlata. She further added, "I don't have any more strength now. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I shall be indebted to you all. Forgive (me)," she wrote.

The wife in her is happy that her husband will have more time at home but the "die-hard fan" in her is sad that PR Sreejesh's galvanising presence in front of the goalpost would no longer be a constant in Indian hockey.

The Indian men's hockey team clinched a second successive bronze medal at the Olympic Games for the first time in 52 years, rallying to beat Spain 2-1 in third place playoff, giving veteran goalkeeper Sreejesh a fitting farewell on Thursday. He was also a part of the squad that won the bronze in the Tokyo Games.

"I am not only his wife, but also a die-hard fan. Being a fan I will definitely miss him on the field and being his wife, I will get more of his time. So I am happy and sad at the same time. Both the emotions are there," Aneeshya, who is a former long-jumper and an Ayurveda doctor, told 'PTI Bhasha'.

She is waiting for him to come home so that she can serve him some traditional Kerala meals that he is very fond of.

"I will cook traditional Kerala food for him, vegetarian and non-vegetarian both. He loves it so much and I know he must be craving it," she said.

After all the trials, tribulations and heartbreak, India finally has a Paris Olympics medal in wrestling. It is the 21-year-old Aman Sehrawat who shines bright in his bronze bout, outclassing Puerto Rico's Darian Cruz by a thumping 13-5 margin to become India's youngest-ever Olympic medallist at 21 years and 24 days old. The previous youngest was badminton superstar PV Sindhu, who had bagged silver in Rio at the age of 21 years, 1 month and 14 days.

World champion Marileidy Paulino wins the women's 400m final comfortably, clocking an Olympic record timing of 48.17 seconds to take the gold. The Dominican Republic's athlete pips Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, who grabs silver in 48.53s and Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek, who takes bronze in 48.98.

Women's Golf: Lydia Ko In Lead, Aditi & Diksha Out Of Medal Contention

For the third time in three days, the women's golf competition at Paris 2024 has a new leader. New Zealand's Lydia Ko, who already has silver and bronze medals from the last two Olympic Games, will hit the course on Saturday in the lead and in quest of her first gold. Ko shot a four-under 68 to move to nine-under overall, two shots clear of USA's Rose Zhang and Japan's Yamashita Miyu, and tied with halfway leader Morgane Metraux of Switzerland. Also in the hunt are Nelly Korda and first-round leader Celine Boutier, tied for seventh at four-under.

Meanwhile, both Indians in the fray had a bad day in office and are virtually out of medal contention. Aditi Ashok ended the day tied at 40th place, while Diksha Dagar fell down from 14th place to being tied at 42nd.

Athletics Medal Update: Men's 400m Hurdles, Triple Jump Decided

USA's Rai Benjamin upstages world record holder and defending champion Karsten Warholm to win the men's 400m hurdles gold. Benjamin wins gold in 46.46s, Warholm reluctantly takes silver after crossing the line in 47.06s, and Brazil's Alison dos Santos takes bronze in 47.26.

In men's triple jump, Spain's Jordan Alejandro Diaz wins gold with a distance of 17.86m, just ahead of Portugal's Pedro Pichardo who claims silver with 17.84m.

Athletics Medal Update: Women's Heptathlon And Shot Put

Belgium's Nafissatou Thiam wins her third consecutive Olympic heptathlon title. She claims the gold with 6880 points, while world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson grabs silver with 6844 points. Over in women's shot put, Germany's Yemisi Ogunleye wins top honours with a flat 20.0m throw, while New Zealand's Maddison-Lee Wesch has to be content with silver after a best effort of 19.68m.

Boxing Medals Update: Men's 71kg, Women's 50kg 

In the first two boxing finals of the evening, two new Olympic champions have been crowned. Uzbekistan's Asadkhuja Muydinkhujaev scores a 5-0 unanimous win against Mexico's Marco Alonso Verde to snare the men's 71kg gold. And Wu Yu from People's Republic of China takes a 4-1 split decision win over Turkiye's Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the women's 50kg final.

Boxing: Imane Khelif Beats Yang Liu To Clinch Welterweight Title

Algeria's Imane Khelif has brushed aside controversy and all the uproar around her gender eligibility tests, by winning the women's welterweight final by a unanimous 5-0 margin against China's Yang Liu. Khelif had earlier raised eyebrows after Italian boxer Angela Carini had withdrawn mid-bout after a punch hit her too hard.

Beach Volleyball: Brazil Pip Canada, Win Women's Gold

After an intense three-setter at the Eiffel Tower Stadium in the women's beach volleyball final, Brazil's Ana Patricia Ramos and Eduarda Lisboa beat Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson 26-24, 12-21, 15-10 for gold. Earlier, Switzerland's Tanja Huberli/Nina Brunner bagged bronze, beating Australian pair Mariafe Artacho del Solar/Taliqua Clancy 21-17, 21-15.
