Paris Paralympics 2024, Day 2 Highlights

Here are the highlights of Day 2 of the 2024 Paris Paralympics. India's para-athletes won four medals on the second day of the games. Avani Lekhara won a gold medal, Manish Narwal took a silver medal whereas Mona Agarwal got a bronze medal in shooting. Preethi Pal won another bronze and became the first para-athlete to win a medal in track in the Paralympics.

Today's first medal event is the Para Athletics - Women’s Discus Throw - F55 Final, scheduled for 1:30 PM. Indian athletes will be competing in this event as well.

The women's 10m air rifle standing SH1 shooting qualifying rounds are underway in Chatearoux with India's Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal in action.

So far, both the Indians have made it up to top 8 with Avani at third currently (197.8 points) and Mona at seventh (207.3 points)

After a strong start with a 21-10 win in the first game, Manasi Joshi narrowly lost the second and deciding games to her Ukrainian opponent, with scores of 15-21 and 21-23. Unfortunately, her close defeats to Indonesia's Qonit Syakuroh and Ukraine's Oksana Kozyna have placed Manasi at the bottom of the SL3 women's singles group.

Indian shooters Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal made a spectacular rise in the first two series of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1 qualifying round. Heading into the third series, they currently stand in second and fourth place, respectively.

Here's the final standing of the Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1

Both the Indians Avani Lekhara and Mona Agarwal have qualified for the final slated for 3:15PM IST today.

Avani finished second with 625.8 points while Mona completes the final round with 623.1 at fifth.

The next shooting event will see Rudransh Khandelwal and Manish Narwal in action in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 qualification at 2:45 PM IST.

India's Karamjyoti delivered a standout final throw of 20.22m in the Women's Discus Throw Final - F55 category. While the gold may be out of reach, she still has a chance to secure the silver.

And they did it! Avani Lakhera secures the gold medal and Mona Agarwal claims the bronze in Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH1.

Avani scored 249.7 which is yet another Paralympic record. With this, she bettered her own record of 249.6 from Tokyo 2020.

Mona claimed the podium finish with an aggregate of 228.7.

India's Manish Narwal qualified for the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 final finishing fifth with a score of 565.

Meanwhile, Rudransh Khandelwal fell just short of the top eight, ending in ninth place with a score of 561.

Para-archer Shyam Sundar Swami lost to Comsan Singpirom of Thailand in a close encounter at the men's individual compound open. After five rounds, the score was tied on 138 points each. The one-arrow shoot-out was followed and Swami hit a 10 in his first attempt. It was looking clear as if the Indian would win but the Thai archer also hit a 10 which was millimetres close to the bullseye, hence he was announced as the winner. Heartbreak for the Indian archer!
