SA Vs BAN, 1st ODI: Bangladesh Create History With First-Ever Win In South Africa - Highlights

Bangladesh scripted their first-ever win against South Africa in South Africa with a commanding 38-run victory in the first ODI at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Friday. Before this match, they had tasted defeats in six Tests, nine ODIs and four T20Is -- a majority of those by massive margins. In the six Tests, five were by an innings margin, and another by 333 runs. And in the ODIs, the closet match was a 61-run defeat. But today, after setting a target of 315 runs, they dismissed South Africa for 276 in 48.5 overs to seal the historic win. After a tumultuous build-up to the tour, Bangladesh played like a champion side, in fact worthy leaders in the ICC World Cup Super League, against a very strong South African side. Asked to bat first, openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Das laid a solid foundation with a 95-run stand, then the ever-reliable Shakib Al Hasan hit a brilliant 77 off 64, and with Yasir Ali (50 off 44), the star all-rounder gave the Bangladesh innings momentum. It was followed by a late flourish as Bangladesh reached 314/7. For the Proteas, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj took a couple of wickets each.

Chasing a big total, South Africa got the jolt as early as the 4th over with the wicket of Janneman Malan. Kyle Verreynne, who filled in for unfit Quinton de Kock, departed in the ninth over, but skipper Temba Bavuma (31 off 55) and Rassie van der Dussen (86 off 98) kept the Proteas in the hunt. The latter then joined hands with David Miller (76 off 57) as they threatened to pull off an improbable win. But Bangladesh bowlers kept taking wickets. Mehidy Hasan claimed 4/61 while Taskin Ahmed got three for 36.

Shakib Al Hasan was adjudged the player of the match. For the record, he was convinced to make the tour after initially being rested by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

After a nervy build-up to the series, both South Africa and Bangladesh can heave a sigh of relief. While most top South Africans white-ball specialists, who had signed up for IPL 2022, have chosen to play the ODI series against Bangladesh, the visitors will be happy to have Shakib Al Hasan in their squad.

A mentally-tired Shakib had wanted to pull out from the SA series but later changed his mind and the Bangladesh Cricket Board gave him a special contract. But Bangladesh have enough in their tank to look South Africa in the eye.

Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, the only Bangladesh batsman to have scored a century in South Africa, are in good form. Taskin Ahmed is expected to exploit the pace and bounce of the Centurion wicket and find support from U19 World Cupper Shoriful Islam and veteran Mustafizur Rahman.

South Africa have a full team as well. A bulk of their team will head to IPL 2022. Quinton de Kock will lead the batting change in Temba Bavuma's squad while speedster Kagiso Rabada and left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi can be a handful for the Bangladeshis.
