Ruthless Mumbai Indians clinched an unprecedented fifth Indian Premier League title as Delhi Capitals were left to contend with a runner-up finish following a five-wicket defeat on Tuesday. (SCORECARD)
Skipper Rohit Sharma led the chase with masterful 68 runs of 51 balls as Mumbai chased down a target of 157 in 18.4 overs.
“We want to make winning a habit, and you couldn't have asked any more from the guys. We were right on the money from ball one and even until today, we never looked back. A lot of credit goes to people behind the scenes as well,” Rohit said after the match. This after Trent Boult (3/30) had reduced the Capitals to 22 for three with an excellent display of fast bowling.
But Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant dug deep and scored unbeaten fifties which lifted Delhi Capitals to 156 for seven. DC at one point were reeling at 22 for three in the 4th over before Iyer (65 off 50 balls) and Rishabh Pant (56 off 38 balls) added 96 runs for the fourth wicket to steer their team to what seemed a defendable total.
Pant hit four boundaries and two sixes on the way to his first fifty of the season, while Iyer struck six fours and two maximums.
If last year's Mumbai Indians won by one-run in Tuesday night, Rohit's aristocratic 68 made it an anti-climax with Mumbai Indians chasing the target in style. Rohit was helped by an equally important 33 runs contribution by Ishan Kishan.
“I think to be honest, I was not looking in good shape before this season. I spoke Krunal (Pandya) and Haridk (Pandya) and worked on my fitness and my off-side play,” Kishan said after the match.
Dejected but resolute Shreyas Iyer promised to comeback stronger next year.
“IPL always amazes you. Probably one of the toughest leagues to play. It's been a great journey. I'm very proud of my boys, it's not a small feat to reach the final. It was a great achievement. Winning the IPL is something more - one step ahead. We'll come back stronger and see to it that we win the trophy,” Iyer said.
