For the eighth time, and the second time in the ongoing series against South Africa, that Virat Kohli has enforced the follow on - a fact which tells his ruthlessness and confidence in his bowlers. Mohammad Azharuddin held the previous record among Indian captains

Virat Kohli on Monday became the Indian captain to enforce follow-on most times, surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin. On Day 3 of the third and final Test against South Africa at Ranchi, Kohli asked the visitors to bat again after taking a 335-run first-innings lead.

This was the eighth time that Kohli has enforced the follow on - a fact which tells Kohli's ruthlessness and confidence on his bowlers. Azharuddin had imposed seven times, while MS Dhoni had five. Sourav Ganguly had four.

Talking about bowlers, Umesh Yadav, who's is filling in for an injured Jasprit Bumrah, has become the first Indian fast bowler to pick 3-plus wickets in five successive innings at home.

Kohli's record when follow-on is five wins and two draws, as compared to seven wins seven when not enforcing the follow-on.

This was also the first time that India enforced follow-on twice in a home series since 1993-94 against Sri Lanka. For the Proteas, this was their first following-on in two consecutive Test matches since 2001-02 against Australia.

India have already taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series win dominant wins in Visakhapatnam and Pune.
