After a busy build-up to the Indian Premier League (IPL) player retention deadline day ahead of the 2022 mega auction, the eight existing teams revealed their respective picks on Tuesday. As expected, there were surprises. Some of the 'moves' were already known, like KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer going for the auction. But the biggest surprise was Sunrisers Hyderabad's failure to retain Rashid Khan and Kolkata Knight Riders picking Venkatesh Iyer ahead of Shubman Gill. KKR also gave the top-billing to Andre Russell. Then Chennai Super Kings decided to elevate 'irreplaceable' Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder was the first pick ahead of MS Dhoni. Mumbai Indians and CSK spent INR 42 crore to retain four players each, the most. Punjab Kings spent only INR 16 crore to retain two players, and they will enter the mega auction with the biggest purse - a whopping INR 72 crore.
