Carlos Brathwaite hit a stunning first ODI century for West Indies but was left devastated when he holed out right at the death to hand New Zealand a dramatic five-run win in the Cricket World Cup at Old Trafford, Manchester on Saturday. Set a target of 292, the Windies were all but defeated at 164/7 but Brathwaite’s 101 off 82 nearly helped the two-time champions seal an incredible chase. With six needed off seven balls, Brathwaite launched a James Neesham delivery over long-on, only for Trent Boult to take an excellent catch just inside the boundary. Earlier, Kane Williamson’s career-best 148 helped the 2015 finalists recover from 7/2 to post 291/8.
