On the last day of the Games, USA stole the march over China winning 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze medals and finishing first. USA won 11 gold medals in swimming with athletics giving them seven gold medals.
China are now second with 38 gold medals followed by USA and hosts Japan on second and third positions, respectively.
China has 38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze medals.
Hosts Japan, riding high on their judo dominance, have 27 gold medals to be placed third. Hosts have won 14 silver and 17 bronze medals. Judo has give Japan nine gold medals. China has dominated weightlifting with five gold medals, three gold medal each in swimming, shooting and diving. They have won two gold medals in table tennis.
Britain with 22 gold, 21 silver and 22 bronze medals are now fourth. Russia Olympic Committee (ROC) with 20 gold, 28 silver and 23 bronze medals placed fifth. Australia who have won 17 gold, seven silver and 22 bronze are sixth.
Netherlands, France Germany and Italy make the top 10.
India added to their medal tally in boxing with Lovlina Borgohain winning bronze medal in the women’s welterweight category after Mirabai Chanu's silver on the opening day. PV Sindhu won a bronze medal for India in badminton.
India are now ranked 66th. Ravi Dahiya settled for silver in wrestling and will be eyeing gold on August 5.
India also claimed a historic bronze in men's hockey ending a 41-year drought. With Bajrang Punia's medal, Indian wrestlers have matched their best performance at the Olympic Games. At the 2012 London Games, Sushil Kumar won a silver and Yogeshwar Dutt returned with a bronze. With his podium, India also equalled their best ever Olympic medal haul of six achieved in in the 2012 London edition.
Neeraj Chopra has become India's second individual gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra.
