Virat Kohli on Thursday became the second Indian captain, after his predecessor Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to lead the side in 50 or more Test matches. He surpassed Sourav Ganguly (49) to achieve the feat when he led India in the second Test against South Africa at Pune.
Dhoni had led India 60 times in the longest format of the game, between 2008 and 2014. Mohammad Azharuddin and Sunil Gavaskar are jointly on fourth with 47 each, followed by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi (40).
Earlier this year, Kohli surpassed Dhoni to become the most successful Indian Test captain. The 30-year-old has 27 wins to his credit.
Kohli won the toss for the second time in the series and once again opted to bat first. Mayank Agarwal's 108 helped India post 273/3 at stumps on Day 1.
