Italy winger Federico Chiesa scored two first-half goals as the defending champions beat North Macedonia 5-2 on Friday to move a step closer to qualifying for the 2024 European Championship. Italy now only need a draw against Ukraine on Monday to secure a spot at next year’s tournament in Germany. North Macedonia had already been eliminated from contention before their latest visit to Italy. It was also a revenge of sorts for Italy, as North Macedonia kept them from qualifying for last year’s World Cup with a 1-0 playoff win over the Azzurri in Palermo.
