A pregnant wild elephant in Kerala’s Silent Valley Forest died of human cruelty after someone offered her a pineapple filled with powerful firecrackers. It exploded in her mouth and her jaws broke. She was found standing in the Velliyar river in Malappuram district on May 27 and died hours later. The culprit hasn’t been identified.

Manu Sharma, who was serving a life term for shooting dead model Jessica Lal in 1999, was released from Tihar Jail after Delhi Lt Governor Anil Baijal approved his premature release. He was convicted of killing Jessica after she refused to serve him a drink at the Tamarind Court restaurant in south Delhi.
The southwest monsoon, which brings India’s four-month-long rainy season, hit the Kerala coast on June 1, its normal onset date, triggering heavy rain in several parts of the state. North India is likely to get “above normal” rainfall, while central India and the southern peninsula will receive “normal” rainfall. Eastern India is likely to receive less rainfall.
