Ranbir Kapoor’s latest film ‘Animal’ has been running in the theatres for nearly three weeks now post its release on December 1, and we must say, the film has emerged as one of the biggest hits of the year.
On its 20th day of release, the film minted Rs 5 crore, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. With the latest collection, the film’s nett domestic box office collections rose to Rs 528.69 crore, and took ‘Animal’ ahead of ‘Gadar 2’. Sunny Deol’s drama had made Rs 525.45 crore nett in India ever since its release in August.
As for its worldwide collections, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film has collected over Rs 851 crore, and is just behind Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’ and ‘Pathaan’ as the third-biggest Indian film of the year. Now as ‘Animal’ enters its fourth week of release, the film is almost completing its run as Shah Rukh Khan-starrer ‘Dunki’ and Prabhas-starrer ‘Salaar’ are releasing in theatres this weekend. With their release, ‘Animal’ would get lesser screens and eventually wrap up its theatrical run.
Not to miss, apart from the massive box office numbers over its three-week run in theatres, ‘Animal’ has been slammed for its perceived violent and misogynistic content. Reacting to the same, during an interview with Connect FM Canada, the director lashed out at critics as they were deciding to focus on a few details and not speaking about the film in totality.
“In a way, I understood their mental status and their IQ… If morality comes into the picture, then you can’t make this film. If everybody is going to focus just on morality, we should stop making films. Let’s just make cartoons,” Vanga said. He even mentioned that he could feel a personal hatred for him in some of the film’s reviews.
As for Ranbir Kapoor’s career, the film is now the actor’s biggest hit. Earlier, it was Rajkumar Hirani’s 2018 film ‘Sanju’, which made Rs 342.53 crore in India, and around Rs 590 crore worldwide. ‘Animal’ clashed at the box office with Vicky Kaushal-starrer ‘Sam Bahadur’, and while the Ranbir Kapoor film had an ‘A’ certificate, it managed to completely overshadow Vicky’s ‘U’ rated film. The film is now the biggest ‘A’ rated grosser in India as well.
Interestingly, Sandeep Reddy Vanga has already announced his next three projects, including Prabhas-starrer 'Spirit',a film with Allu Arjun, and then moving on to the ‘Animal’ sequel, titled ‘Animal Park’.
‘Animal’ also featured Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Triptii Dimri among others.
