‘AP Dhillon: First Of A Kind’: Script, Direction & Technical Aspects
Jay Ahmed’s direction is definitely top-notch. He manages to bring to life the unheard-of life of AP Dhillon and his group members who came from nothing and went on to suddenly become this overnight global sensation. The show has been well directed, but what’s slightly disappointing is that there isn’t enough of the lead trio’s interview, including AP Dhillon. A lot of footage was hogged by the duo who came on board and turned their managers. It’s not that they were not insightful, but it would have been a lot more interesting to listen to more in-depth stories and tales from the lead trio. Also, considering AP Dhillon’s love for his family in India, a bit more of their interviews as well would have made the show more wholesome.
Jamie Gowenlock’s cinematography is top-notch. Capturing not just live shows but also following around superstars like AP Dhillon and his teammates for almost the entire day, would have been tough, and it’s truly commendable how Gowenlock managed to get such interesting bits of conversations from real life. It’s like being there at the right time, and also being able to capture that on camera. To add to that, the way he has captured Vancouver Island’s natural beauty is simply amazing. The overhead shots and the drone captures felt as if they were brought out of a nature documentary.
The editing by Sarjit Bains, Gareth Blower, Iain Chambers and Joe Swanson makes you want to watch more and more of their journey. The way they’ve chopped almost 3 years’ worth of footage and skilfully put it into 4 episodes of around 30 minutes each is brilliant. Considering the popularity of AP Dhillon, it would be worth the try to release some more of the extra footage from the shows as a second season or maybe an extended version cut.
