Priyanka Chopra recently grabbed headlines for mentioning that she received equal pay for the first time in her career only for ‘Citadel’, which meant after two decades of being in showbiz. She revealed that she didn’t believe that the idea of demanding equal pay was achievable.

Chatting with Film Companion, Priyanka mentioned how she had accepted that she’d always made less than her male co-stars, especially in India. “I also didn’t expect it, when my agents told me, ‘You’re playing a co-lead, let us go and talk to Amazon about getting you parity’,” she had said.

She added, “I was like, ‘Okay, you can try, but it’s never going to happen’. I didn’t believe it. Because for so many years, I fought that fight, and I had that conversation.” When asked if she fought about the same in India, Priyanka said with a laugh, “Of course. I mean, I never asked for parity, are you kidding me? I only asked for a little bit more, woh bhi nahi milta tha (even that I wouldn’t get). So, I just gave up the fight.”

Priyanka further thanked Amazon for coming through for ‘Citadel’, which stars Priyanka opposite Richard Madden. “I remember I was so shocked that day when I went back, I popped champagne. My family was celebrating. It’s momentous. I’ve had a 22-year career, but one step at a time, one win at a time.”

Not to miss, a recent story in the The Hollywood Reporter suggested that Priyanka made even more money than she was initially supposed to on ‘Citadel’, since the show underwent major reshoots.

‘Citadel’ will be released next week on Prime Video, starting with two episodes.
