Shah Rukh Khan's latest film ‘Dunki’, helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, has been faring well at the box office ever since its release on December 21. On Sunday, the fourth day of its release, the film witnessed a jump in its box office collections as ‘Dunki’ crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India.
After making Rs 29.20 crore on its opening day, Rs 20.12 crore on its first Friday, Rs 25.61 crore on its first Saturday, the film reportedly made around Rs 31.50 crore on its first Sunday. With the latest collection, the film’s total India box office collection is around Rs 106.43 crore. ‘Dunki’ also witnessed a rise of around 25 per cent on Sunday, thereby crossing the Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic box office.
Now with the holiday season around and the solid word of mouth backing the film, ‘Dunki’ would hopefully score good numbers on Christmas Day as well. It is also so because the film's box office business is dependent on multiplexes and family audiences. Hence, it is expected that with the holidays around, viewers would throng to the cinema halls to catch a glimpse of their favourite actor.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Dunki’ has an overall 49.67 per cent occupancy across its Hindi shows. The major regions that contributed to the film's occupancy are Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, National Capital Region (NCR), Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Bengaluru and Lucknow, according to film trade portal Sacnilk.
After joining the Rs 100 crore club at the box office, ‘Dunki’ has managed to set multiple records. It is not only the 116th Hindi movie to cross Rs 100 crore in India but also the tenth movie featuring Shah Rukh Khan to do so. His other films that have earlier crossed Rs 100 crore at the domestic box office are ‘Pathaan’, ‘Jawan’, ‘Chennai Express’, ‘Happy New Year’, ‘Raees’, ‘Dilwale’, ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, ‘Ra.One’ and ‘Don 2: The Chase Continues’.
As for Rajkumar Hirani, ‘Dunki’ is also his fourth film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic box office after ‘PK’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Sanju’. For Taapsee Pannu, it is her third film to achieve such numbers.
Coming to the film’s story, it focuses on 'donkey flight' or 'dunki', a backdoor entry technique used by several immigrants to enter countries like the US, the UK and Canada. It also showcases the lives of the individuals who choose to enter these countries using the illegal route.
Apart from Shah Rukh Khan, the film also stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani, and Anil Grover in pivotal roles. It was released in theatres worldwide on December 21, a day ahead of Prabhas-led ‘Salaar’.
