Shah Rukh Khan-led film ‘Dunki’, which kicked off with a decent start at the box office, clearly benefited from the long Christmas weekend. The film had its first day collection of Rs 29.2 crore, but then saw a drop on its second day (Rs 20.12 crore). It again gained momentum on Saturday (Rs 25.61 crore) and earned even more than its opening day (Rs 30.7 crore) on its first Sunday. On Monday, the Christmas Day, the film again saw an impressive footfall at the theatres despite strong competition from Prabhas’ ‘Salaar’, which released a day after on December 22.
As reported by industry tracker Sacnilk, ‘Dunki’ collected Rs 22.50 crore on the occasion of Christmas and its first Monday. Now, the film’s total domestic collection in five days is Rs 128.13 crore. Red Chillies Entertainment, the production company behind the film, posted ‘Dunki’ worldwide box office gross to be Rs 211.13 crore after four days of release. Clearly, the film is inching towards the Rs 250 crore mark with Christmas day collections.
The Rajkumar Hirani-helmed drama saw an overall 39.53% Hindi occupancy, and the maximum footfall was recorded during the evening shows since it was a holiday. Now, if the film maintains a steady momentum at the ticket counters, it can also encash the upcoming New Year weekend.
Meanwhile, coming to its competitor, ‘Salaar’, the film has been earning big every day. On Monday, it collected Rs 42.50 crore, which is around double of what ‘Dunki’ raked in. As per Sacnilk, ‘Salaar’ has earned Rs 251.60 crore within four days of its release.
Coming back to ‘Dunki’, the film is based on the illegal immigration technique, donkey flight. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film’s story has been written by Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon. Produced under the banners of Red Chillies Entertainment, Jio Studios and Rajkumar Hirani Films, the film also stars Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal (special appearance), and Boman Irani.
Released worldwide on December 21, the film opened to mixed reviews from critics.
