Veteran actor Rakesh Bedi found himself to be a victim of cyber crime recently. The actor was reportedly scammed, and he ended up losing Rs 85,000 during the process.
Bedi was scammed by a scammer who posed as army personnel and showed interest in buying his flat in Pune which was worth Rs 87 lakhs. As reported by The Times of India, the scammer found Bedi’s contact details on a housing portal on which he had advertised the flat. The person identified himself as Aditya Kumar and shared identity cards and other documents that showed him in uniform.
Bedi said, “I believed the person because I had earlier sold one of my properties to defense personnel and it was genuine. This made me believe the caller.”
The scammer told him that his senior official would be buying the flat. A police officer at the Oshiwara Police Station revealed, “The actor was provided with an account number and was asked to do a Rs 1 transaction through G Pay. After the successful transaction, Bedi was again asked to transfer Rs 50,000 which he did. Later, the scammer told the actor that he had transferred Rs 50000. When Bedi informed that he did not receive it, the scammer claimed that as it is an Indian Army Account and there should be a similar account balance in both parties' accounts.”
As the transaction was not going through, Rakesh Bedi transferred Rs 50,000 from his wife’s account. As the actor made a transaction of Rs 35,000, he realized that he was being scammed. He called the scammer again, but they stopped responding to his calls.
The actor filed a police complaint at the Oshiwara Police Station and the cyber cell is working on tracking the scammers down.
