Oscar-nominated British actor Tom Wilkinson has passed away, official statements have confirmed. He was 75. 

The actor, known for 'The Full Monty' suddenly died at home on Saturday. "It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him," said his agent on behalf of the family.

Wilkinson was known for many of his works and won many acclaims to his name. He was also nominated for the Oscars under the Best Actor Award category for 'In The Bedroom' and under the Best Supporting Actor category for the George Clooney-starrer 'Michael Clayton.'

He is fondly remembered by many for his role of a former steel mill foreman Gerald Cooper in 'The Full Monty.' This movie gave him the recognition that was due and this movie about a group of men strippers even bagged an Oscar for Best Original Musical and was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. The actor also took a home Best Supporting Actor at BAFTA for this very role.

The late actor even won a Golden Globe in 2009 and an Emmy Award in 2008 for his portrayal of American political figure Benjamin Franklin in the HBO series 'John Adams.'

He was also well-known for his roles in the BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel 'Martin Chuzzlewit'; the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility'; and movies like 'The Grand Budapest Hotel,' 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,' 'Batman Begins,' 'Valkyrie,' and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.' 

Back in 2005, the actor was honoured for his contributions to drama and cinema by being made a member of the Order of the British Empire.
