Veteran actor Tanuja, mother to Kajol, Tanisha and mother-in-law of actor Ajay Devgn, was admitted to a Mumbai hospital on Sunday evening. According to sources, the 80-year-old actor has been hospitalised due to age-related illness. She is said to be under observation at the ICU of a hospital in Mumbai’s Juhu area.
“She is under observation and is doing well. There’s nothing to worry about,” a PTI report confirmed.
Coming to the legendary actress’s career, the daughter of filmmaker Kumarsen Samarth and actress Shobhna Samarth, worked extensively in Hindi and Bengali cinema. She tied the knot with filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, and they have two daughters, actresses Kajol and Tanisha.
Tanuja kicked off her film career with her elder sister Nutan in ‘Hamari Beti’ (1950) as a child actor. As a leading actress, Tanuja’s first film was ‘Hamari Yaad Aayegi’ (1961), and went on to star in films like ‘Baharein Phir Bhi Ayengi’ (1966), ‘Jewel Thief’ (1969), ‘Paisa Ya Pyaar’ (1969), ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ (1971) and ‘Mere Jeevan Sathi’ (1972).
In Bengali cinema, she starred in films like ‘Deya Neya’ (1963), ‘Anthony-Firingee’ (1967), ‘Teen Bhuvaner Parey’ (1969) and ‘Rajkumari’ (1970), among many others.
Earlier this year, in September 2023, Kajol wished her mother Tanuja Samarth a happy 80th birthday, and thanked her for her wisdom and guidance. Actor Ajay Devgn too had wished his mother-in-law a happy birthday and wrote: “Our constant source of joy and just pure positive energy. Happiest birthday Tanujaji! Keep glowing as always. Love & Respect''.
