It is a tremendous honour for me to be awarded the Crossword Award forEnglish Fiction for 2001. India is a nation that appears to be bursting atthe seams with prodigiously talented writers who have been winning everyother literary award around the globe, and now seem just lining up for thenext Nobel prize for literature. Merely to be included in their ranks ishonour enough. To be acknowleded in this fashion is an overwhelmingexperience.
I only hope that my work will be one additional demonstration to the worldthat writers of English fiction in India are not limited by the constraintsof culture, geography and experience and are capable of producing greatworks of imagination and skill in every genre of English letters.
I thank the organisers and judges of the Crossword Award for EnglishFiction 2001 for this signal honour.
