The Other Cheek
We must all indeed be masochists: the one writer being actively wooed by the Jaipur litfest is Naipaul, despite his castigating us as "materialist India, with no idea of its history or literature" (and this because we didn’t respect his father’s book as we ought to have!). But he has so far said neither yes nor no, although his biographer Patrick French has confirmed that he intends to come, with or without Naipaul.

Ticket Too Snide
Oh, these writers and their status games! The latest to demand a first class ticket both for himself and his wife as a pre-condition for accepting the Jaipur litfest’s invitation is Michael Ondaatje. Now don’t you go asking, Michael who? He wrote The English Patient.
