But that isn’t why foreign publishers and agents are landing up in Jaipur in late January. They’re scouting for fresh talent at the special conference, Translating Bharat, where nearly 52 regional writers from across India will be showcased.

London-based Shrabani Basu, whose forthcoming book, Victoria and Abdul, was sold to Rupa by Red Ink Agency, had a surprise awaiting her when she recently visited Delhi. Her agent and publisher held a book party for her, even though the book is still being written.
