But ultimately there is no advocacy for one type of feminism over the other. There is a wonderful chapter on the sharp divisions between "secular" and "religious" activists in Turkey. What comes through is societies under great trauma and upheaval. The rise of radical/political Islam has not only led to blind stereotyping and a great fear of Muslims in the rest of the world. It has also created anxieties and distortions within Muslim societies. These are people at the frontline of a great civilisational crisis of our time, entire nations gripped by fear. In such a time and place, women’s movements can only take a few tentative steps.
