History, Her Story

This collection seeks to lift this "veil of silence" on the eastern partition, through the lives and memories of uprooted women, creative and literary texts, documentary and rare literary evidence, essays and interviews. Look out for a moving extract from Ritwik Ghatak’s ’60s epic film Subarnarekha. Or from Salil Sen’s 1951 play Natun Yehudi. Or a collection of memories of people from Sonarang (Gold-coloured) village. But is Bangladesh a little thinly represented? The editors discuss Akhtarujjaman Elias, its foremost litterateur, abundantly, yet one would have liked a bigger extract of his work. Indeed Elias is quite untranslatable but his magic must radiate beyond the boundaries of the two Bengals.
