Why have you changed publishers recently?

With this book, I felt like I was at a crossroads. My writing has been changing, and I needed to work with people who shared my vision.

How is it to collaborate with different authors on a book?

It used to be easier, but honestly, I don’t think I could be as open to it now.

How long does it take to finish a rough draft?

I let a story develop for months. After 8-10 months of planning (procrastinating!) I finish a first draft in two weeks.

Who do you enjoy reading from amongst peers?

Recently, during a book tour, I read the latest Preeti Shenoy and Ravi Subramanian books.

Any favourite author?

I really admire Jhumpa Lahiri. Also, I try to learn from the works of James Baldwin and Thomas Bernhard.

A lot of pop-fiction is about history and mythology. Is a detour tempting?

I haven’t thought about it, but maybe. I also read Anand Neelkanthan’s Asura.

If not an author, who do you see yourself as?

Some sort of an artist, for sure. Maybe a painter or a photographer. I’m 24 and I like to think that I can be whoever I want!

Do you consciously look to target a certain audience?

No, once I’ve rewritten and edited the manuscript to satisfaction, that’s when the editorial department gives its input and we evaluate the market.

What was your experience of studying at New York like?

I graduated a few days ago, so it’s still very fresh! For me, it was more about learning to read better.

How important is it for a young author to find the right publisher?

Often, young writers are impulsive. I learned slowly how important it is to be working with a publisher who believes in you and your work.
